One of the latest announcements from Electronic Arts and Lucas is the sequel to the hit Star Wars games Jedi: Fallen Order. Dubbed as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 as of this writing, this game seeks to continue the story that started in the first game while also banking on how popular the original game was to fans of the Star Wars franchise. With that said, is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 multiplayer, and does it have crossplay?
Unfortunately for fans of the multiplayer gameplay, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is probably going to be a single-player only game, similar to the first game. That’s because this game focuses on a narrative-based approach that follows the story of the Jedi Cal Kestis and his adventures with the crew of the Mantis.
While we do live in a day and age where plenty of different games are played in multiplayer and across different systems, not all games need to have multiplayer. Some games are as great as they are because they focus more on the story and single-player experience rather than on playing with and against other people. The single-player formula was what Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order followed, and it is likely what the sequel will follow as well.
What Is The Gameplay Of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2?
Late in 2019, plenty of Star Wars fans all over the world rejoiced when Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was released as the newest addition to the Star Wars video game universe. The amazing reception coming from fans and critics alike came from the fact that this game introduced a fresh new format to the usual Star Wars games that were released in the past few years.
While plenty of people loved the fact that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order used a narrative-based approach that comes with rich characters, amazing visuals, and an interesting storyline, one of the things that people loved about it was its gameplay. The gameplay was not something that was new to the video game industry, but it brought back the very essence of what a Star Wars game should be.
After the success of the original Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game, EA banked on the opportunity to announce the development of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2, which is a direct sequel to the original game. But what is the gameplay of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2?
As of this writing, we don’t know a lot about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 and what its gameplay or plot will be about. However, considering that this game will be a direct sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, there is a huge chance that it will be using the same gameplay that made the first game so popular.
The first Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order used an action-adventure approach in its gameplay in the sense that you are controlling Cal Kestis from the third-person point of view. Controlling Cal allows you to perform different types of lightsaber attacks and abilities that you can unlock from your skill tree. The game also uses an exploration approach that allows you to explore different locales in the game.
Considering that the sequel will be similar to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it seems almost certain that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 will follow the same gameplay mechanics that made the first game so popular while adding a few things here and there to make the game more interesting and to bank on the capabilities of the next-gen consoles.
As the old adage goes, there is no need to fix something that works. In this case, because the simple action-adventure gameplay mechanics worked well with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the chances of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 changing or overhauling the gameplay almost entirely seems to be slim.
And, if you think about it, it is rare for a sequel game to totally overhaul the gameplay, especially when the first game’s mechanics were popular among fans. Imagine if God of War 2 had entirely different gameplay compared to the first God of War game. Similarly, it would be a strange decision on the part of the developers if they were to completely overhaul gameplay that worked well in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 Multiplayer?
As mentioned, the chances of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 staying true to the same formula that made the original game so successful is pretty high. That means that there is also a good chance that there won’t be a multiplayer mode in this game.
Like a lot of action-adventure games, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order focused on a narrative-based approach that was linear in terms of its story but was very successful in how it delivered its story with respect to the gameplay.
As such, a multiplayer mode did not fit the overall goals of the first Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order game, as it focused more on the delivery of the narrative and the story of Cal Kestis and the entire crew of the Mantis.
It is also the fact that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a single-player game that made it so popular among fans. While the Battlefield games, which featured multiplayer modes, were successful in their own right, fans did not necessarily like the fact that it focused more on a multiplayer approach and on a loot box system that seemingly destroyed the essence of what a Star Wars game should be.
The Star Wars universe is a vast one that banks on amazing storytelling above all of the factors that make it special. As such, a game that focuses more on a multiplayer experience instead of a good single-player narrative-based approach did not sit in well with some of the diehard fans of the Star Wars franchise. This is why Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was a fresh departure from the usual service-based approach that was prevalent in the older Star Wars games.
Given that the first game did not have multiplayer, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is unlikely to have its own multiplayer mode as well. Adding multiplayer to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 would completely change the identity of the game while also making it feel clunkier than it should be.
Is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 Crossplay?
So, as mentioned, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is most likely going to follow the same single-player approach that made Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order popular. Given the possibility that it will not have multiplayer, it only follows that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 will not have crossplay as well.
Will There Be A Multiplayer Star Wars Game?
Probably one of the biggest reasons why Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 is going to be a single-player game without a multiplayer mode is the fact that this game is not the only upcoming Star Wars game.
Along with Jedi: Fallen Order 2, two other games were announced. The first one is a first-person shooter game that is overseen by the same person who oversaw the original Star Wars: Battlefront games and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Because the Battlefront games and The Force Unleashed have multiplayer modes, it is likely that this newer game will have a multiplayer mode as well.
Meanwhile, there is also a strategy game being developed. The studio behind this other Star Wars game is Bit Reactor, a studio recently formed by former XCOM developers. There is also a good chance that this game will feature a multiplayer mode as well.
So, because there will be two other games that will possibly have multiplayer modes, it doesn’t make sense to make Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2 a multiplayer game. After all, EA and the other publishers can stand to profit more by releasing multiple Star Wars games that cater to different gaming markets.
