Is the 'Thunderbolts*' Trailer Implying that Marvel is De-Canonizing one 'Guardians of the Galaxy' scene?

The MCU’s future appears bright again after a string of underwhelming films, thanks to Deadpool and Wolverine enjoying a good run in theaters and the thrilling announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as Victor Von Doom as the MCU’s next major antagonist.

The MCU will release a number of additional projects in the meantime, prior to the release of the next two major Avengers films. All of them are very much anticipated, albeit some will cause more excitement than others. One of these projects is the anticipated Thunderbolts* film, which is scheduled for release on May 2, 2025, if nothing changes.

The first proper trailer for the upcoming movie has just been released, and the fans are seemingly loving it; the trailer also finally revealed a lot of new information, and we are more than happy to share it with you and analyze it for you.

The scene we are going to talk about in this report is one that confused fans, who want to know what is going to happen to a major moment from an older MCU entry.

The theory, or – to be precise – question goes as follows:

At the end of ‘The guardians of the galaxy Holiday special’, it is revealed that Nebula gifts Rocket Bucky’s prosthetic vibranium arm but in the recent released Thunderbolts* trailer, we see Bucky has his arm back.

I hope the disappearance of the arm and mysterious return will be addressed OR this is a completely new arm.

I just don’t want the end of Christmas Special scene to be forgotten like it never happened.

The discussion was actually started on Reddit by user United_Pineapple_932, who actually has a valid argument here, as the two scenes do seem to imply a change.

Now, we still don’t know when the Thunderbolts* are set and the circumstances of Rocket getting that arm have not been completely cleared up, so there is some space that the writers can still use to explain both scenes, but we don’t think it will be the solution.

In our opinion, there are two scenarios. One, Marvel is actually de-canonizing the scene from The Guardians of the Galaxy special, which wouldn’t be all too surprising, seeing how the series ended and how Marvel doesn’t really have any immediate plans for these characters, while the members of the Thunderbolts are going to play an important role.

The second scenario is an easier one, and that is that both scenes are and will remain canon, with Bucky simply getting a new arm. This seems like the most elegant of solutions and we hope that Marvel decides to go with this one.
