Is Under the Banner of Heaven Getting a Season 2 & When?

Under the Banner of Heaven tells the story of the events surrounding the gruesome killings of Brenda Wright Lafferty and her infant daughter in a small Mormon town in America. The series is the adaptation of the book of the same title. And the book itself is based on real-life events that actually happened back in the 80s.

The series stays true to the storyline of the book but introduces new characters, such as the main character named Detective Jeb Pyre, who is played by Garfield. Pyre was introduced to the series as a drastic change because the showrunner wanted to be sensitive enough not to include the actual police officers who are involved in the investigation of the murders.

Of course, the addition of Garfield’s Jeb Pyre allows the audience to see the events of the series from the perspective of the man investigating the events surrounding the gruesome murder. That’s because Pyre himself is a devout Mormon, and that fact allows us to see how conflicted he is with the killing of Brenda Wright Lafferty because of the involvement of the Mormon church.

Going back to our point, Under the Banner of Heaven is a limited series because of how it is based on a book that tells the story of real events. The series itself already has a specific ending that is based on the ending of the book and what happened in real life. As such, it being a limited series makes sense, considering that a series that is based on real-life events could be stretched farther than it should.

Will Under The Banner Of Heaven Be Getting A Season 2?

As mentioned, Under the Banner of Heaven is a limited series. That means that it was meant to have only one season that should resolve the entire murder case involving the killings of Brenda Wright Lafferty. But is there a possibility that Under the Banner of Heaven will be getting a second season?

At this point, it is unlikely that Under the Banner of Heaven will be getting a season 2 because of the fact that it is a limited series. The very nature of a limited series requires the show to have only one season that will resolve the entire plot or storyline. But that doesn’t entirely dismiss the possibility that it will have a season 2 because a limited series can still have multiple seasons that follow an anthology-style that tells different stories and plots per season.

For example, a series like The Haunting of Hill House was meant to be a limited series. But it did get a sequel that features different characters and a different storyline while carrying the same “Haunting” title.

While the Haunting series are not based on real life, there is a possibility that a show like Under the Banner of Heaven can follow a similar format in the sense that it can have multiple seasons that follow different detectives solving different real-life cases per season. 

But while that may be possible, we are not banking on it because there haven’t been any announcements regarding the future of Under the Banner of Heaven. That means that the most likely scenario is that Under the Banner of Heaven is going to be a one-and-done series that won’t be getting a second season in any format.
