‘It: Welcome to Derry’ Has Three-Season Plan, Each Season to Be Set in a Different Period
HBO is gearing up for a big horror project in 2025 with Welcome to Derry, a nine-episode prequel to Stephen King’s IT. The series is being led by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, with the hope that it will last for three seasons.
Muschietti shared that the show will dive into the interludes from the original IT book, which cover key moments from Mike Hanlon’s research: “The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff.“
These events will explore major catastrophes that occurred whenever Pennywise returned after hibernation, including the fire at Black Spot, the Bradley Gang massacre in the 1930s, and the explosion at Kitchener Ironworks. Each season will focus on one of these events.
The first season will focus on 1962, leading up to the events in the first IT movie. If the show does well, the team plans to take us further back in time in the following seasons, with each season exploring a different decade. The second season will jump to 1935, and the third will set the stage in 1908. As Muschietti said: “We are basing the three seasons of this series on each of these catastrophic events.“
This has been confirmed in a recent interview by director Andy Muschietti, which you can check out here (although we are warning you – the interview is in Spanish):
Warner Bros. is happy with how the first season turned out and is eager to move forward with season two. The show will air on HBO and stream on Max. Fans can expect the premiere to drop later this year.
