With her Harry Potter books, which were later adapted into a popular and successful film series, author J.K. Rowling raised and inspired several generations of children around the world. The series is currently being adapted for television, but despite the fact that the series is still one of the most cherished ones of all time, the author has recently been in the spotlight not because of her works, but because of politics.
As you probably know – regardless of whether you’ve read all our reports or not – Rowling has recently been leading a crusade against transgender people, and while some of her stances initially had the value of an argument, she has now taken it so far that most fans consider her to be an annoying bigot, as even the Harry Potter stars have – more or less – distanced themselves from her.
But, Rowling is not giving up and after a series of attacks related to the 2024 Paris Olympics, she has now decided to do the same for the Paralympic Games, which have recently been closed. This time, it is Valentina Petrillo, and the Paralympian has decided to respond.
Just like the case of Imane Khelif, where Rowling kept on insisting that the Algerian boxer was male, despite all the apparent evidence, she has now decided to attack trans-paralympian Valentina Petrillo, who recently competed and won medals in Paris. And while Petrillo’s case is a bit different – she was a man until 2019 when she started the transition process and has been competing in women’s categories since 2020; Khelif is biologically female and has been a woman since birth – she is now legally a woman and she has the right to be treated as one. Unless you’re asking Rowling:
Why all the anger about the inspirational Petrillo? The cheat community has never had this kind of visibility! Out and proud cheats like Petrillo prove the era of cheat-shaming is over. What a role model! I say we give Lance Armstrong his medals back and move on. #Cheats #NoShame pic.twitter.com/bvqhs3DexI

You may think what you want about the case, but the undeniable fact is that Petrillo is now legally a woman, and based on the current rules, she is able to compete in female categories. This is not cheating, nor is this comparable to Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal; if anyone’s to blame, it’s the rule-makers, not Petrillo. Also, this isn’t something that directly concerns Rowling, so why should she meddle into this affair, in the first place?
Be that as it may, Petrillo has decided to respond to Rowling, and the answer is very interesting:
“I’m flattered that Rowling is talking about me – I’ve never even read Harry Potter. I’m told she wrote it but I didn’t read it. By the way, I was told that she in her own book wrote about a sport where there is no gender. So I was expecting different behaviour from Rowling.”
