James Gunn Answers Some Important Questions Following Batman’s DCU Debut
The animated series Creature Commandos, now streaming on Max, has been impressing viewers by setting the stage for a brand-new DC universe without losing focus on its gripping story. By using Cersei as a villain early on, writer and producer James Gunn introduces Themyscira’s mysterious island, hinting at connections to Wonder Woman.
A shocking vision in Episode 4 showed Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) glimpsing a terrifying end for the DCU, packed with clever Easter eggs. In Episode 6, we dive into Dr. Phosphorus’ origin story, featuring Alan Tudyk as the voice of the tragic character.
For the first time in this series, we see Batman in action. Although his appearance is brief, it left us analyzing every detail. Gunn admitted to Rotten Tomatoes TV (see below) that he deliberately kept Batman’s look mostly hidden, opting for more silhouettes rather than revealing key design elements. He explained, ‘I wasn’t ready to commit to that.’
This cautious approach has fueled speculation, especially about Batman’s costume. After years of black suits in live-action films, many are hoping for a return to the classic grey-and-blue design. Gunn hasn’t confirmed what his Batman will wear in live-action, but he has shared some important details:
This version of Batman is already active in the DCU, and his presence is significant, much like Superman’s. Gunn noted that there’s no need to rehash origin stories, as these heroes are already well-established.
Creature Commandos has done an excellent job of blending fresh characters, like its villain team, with existing DC lore, such as Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. Gunn’s willingness to explore other stories, like a possible Clayface movie, shows the flexibility in building this new world.
The latest episode is available to stream now, and the finale drops on Thursday, January 9. Catch up soon to see how the story unfolds!
