Warner Bros., the company that holds the rights to DC Comics characters, has, as you know, launched the DCEU as an attempt to rival Disney’s and Marvel’s growing MCU.
However, the original Zack Snyder-led project failed due to a series of controversial decisions and horrible projects. Snyder was replaced at one point as Warner Bros. decided to find a savior for their shared universe.
At that point, James Gunn was called in. When James Gunn took over the DCEU, which was in awful chaos, he decided to start over and create a new fictional universe called DCU. His Superman, which will debut David Corenswet in the role, will be the first major DCU picture and will be released early next year.
Of course, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the project, and fans are desperate to find out more. While Gunn has teased a lot of information, the official trailer still hasn’t been released and we are receiving a very small amount of information from the company. But, a recent interview might reveal more.
In a recent interview with MovieZine, James Gunn discussed the upcoming Superman film, and one of the biggest questions about the movie was its tone.
Namely, a lot of fans are worried about how the tone of the film will influence its success. We know that the fans loved Donner’s family-friendly Superman movies, but it was a different time then. Now, fans want more darker and deeper stories, but we know that Snyder’s Man of Steel was not received with universal acclaim.
Knowing Gunn’s specific approach (best seen in his Guardians of the Galaxy movies), the fans are worried about the Superman movie as we still don’t have any ideas on what the movie is going to look like. Well, the guys from MovieZine asked Gunn about that, and here is what he said:
Everything’s going to be totally different. One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways. They’ve told stories that were more family-orientated, stories that were more adult-orientated, dark stories, light stories. I think for us, we just want to tell a bunch of different stories. A lot of those different stories are going to be in the DCU.
We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker all in the same universe. Something very adult like Peacemaker [and] something pretty family-friendly like Superman.
I think that to be able to tell different kinds of stories is kind of what makes things fun. One of the things I’ve gotten a little sick of is all these stories being relatively the same. I’m trying to step outside of that. We at DC are trying to step outside of that.
The source? Here it is:
James Gunn says ‘Superman’ is “relatively serious” and “pretty family friendly”

As you can see, the approach is going to be mixed in that aspect, with the movie combining a serious tone with a “family-friendly” atmosphere, which could – from our perspective – be a good thing.
