Jeffrey Wright has been reflecting on the challenges of his Oscar campaign for American Fiction, which earned him the 2023 Best Actor nomination. He admits the whole process was a tough grind, especially the media push, though he appreciated the chance to connect with those who respected his work over the years.

He won the award after the film made a splash at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, taking home the People’s Choice Award. From there, it racked up more accolades, including Gotham and Indie Spirit nominations.

Wright noted that while the campaign felt at times overwhelming, it was also meaningful, especially when interacting with peers who recognized his entire career, not just his role in the film. He mentioned how good it felt to be recognized, but he’s relieved that the intense media cycle is over.

Wright has also said that American Fiction is the most personal role he’s ever taken on. The film, based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, portrays a complex, loving, and dysfunctional Black family, something Wright hadn’t previously experienced on screen.

Growing up in a family shaped by strong women, including his mother and aunt, Wright found the role resonated deeply with his own life.

During filming, he realized just how important the film was when the crew began showing more pride in their work. He noticed that as they put in longer hours, their attention to detail grew, and the energy on set became more focused, signaling they were onto something special.

Wright recognized these signs of commitment as confirmation that the film was making an impact.
