Frank Herbert’s beloved sci-fi saga Dune is one of the most popular sci-fi stories of all time. Many consider it to be “The Lord of the Rings of sci-fi,” as you might know. It has been an inspiration to many and as you know, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve is currently working on a trilogy of films based on the series.
Dune and Dune: Part Two have already been released, while the third and final movie of the trilogy, Dune: Messiah, is currently in production. In the meantime, we are also able to enjoy a prequel series titled Dune: Prophecy, which is currently airing.
While we’re waiting for the third movie and enjoying the show, we have decided to talk about a recent interview with Josh Brolin, who is playing Gurney Halleck in the movies. And while the gist of his interview was about him and his autobiography, he also commented on the movie and Villeneuve’s Oscar chances. Keep reading if you want to find out what he said!
If you remember, the first Dune film was nominated for a total of 10 Oscars, winning six in technical categories. It was nominated for Best Picture, but Villeneuve wasn’t nominated for best director that year.
Dune: Part Two has been labeled as an improvement on the first film and we cannot deny that the $700+ million movie was better than the first one in several aspects, and the direction clearly shows it.
Dune: Part Two has already been labeled as one of the potential favorites for the upcoming, 97th Academy Awards, even though the nominations have not been announced yet.
Many critics and analysts think that the movie will most certainly be a top contender and to be frank, we can only agree with that. In light of the improvements, many also think that Villeneuve deserves a Best Director nomination this time and Josh Brolin wholeheartedly agrees:
If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting. It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.

As you can see, Brolin is pretty firm in his belief that Brolin deserves an Oscar nod and to be honest, we agree. The direction was truly impressive, and while we don’t believe that Brolin is really going to retire over this, the statement does confirm his firm belief in Villeneuve and his work, so we can only support both of them from this place. Of course, we will keep you up-to-date as soon as we have any updates related to this topic.
