‘Knives Out 3’ Gets Official Title: Get Ready for ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’!
It all started in 2019 when Lionsgate released Knives Out. At the time, director Rian Johnson was not beloved by many because of his polarizing work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, so the movie was sort of an attempt at redemption for the filmmaker. Starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, the film was a whodunnit that featured an ensemble cast, and it was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as Knives Out became one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre.
A sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, soon followed, and while that movie was also well-received, it was not a genre masterpiece like the first one. The case was feeble at best, at moments even ridiculous, Blanc’s role was diminished to that of a supporting investigator in favor of some other characters, and it was more or less a mess that hit the right social moment, which is why it was so successful, although it failed as a genre work, unlike the original film. Now, a third film is in the works and we finally found out its title!
Yesterday, Netflix – yes, the streaming service bought the rights to the movies after Knives Out, and that might have influenced the change in direction as well – announced that the third film was going to be titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and that filming would be commencing later this year, with a 2025 planned release date. Johnson is returning to write and direct, and Craig is set to reprise his role once again, but the rest of the cast is unknown as of the time of writing. There is a possibility that Hugh Grant might make a return as Blanc’s husband, but that is still unconfirmed.
The plot is also unknown as of the time of writing, but Johnson had revealed earlier this year that he had the whole idea in his head:
“It’s coming along. I obviously couldn’t work during the [Writer’s Guild of America] strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing.”

The movie is definitely going to attract a lot of attention, but we just hope that the third movie will see a return to the genre basics that made the first film so great and that it will be less of a social commentary; there is an effective way of combining both, and we hope Johnson finds it!
