Akira Himekawa, the pseudonym of the female duo behind multiple Legend of Zelda manga, is stepping into fresh territory with their new original series, Kamudo. Known for adapting classic Nintendo games into manga since the 90s, the team has brought stories like Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, and Twilight Princess to life.

Their art and storytelling have captivated readers, adding depth and character to the world of Zelda.

Himekawa first teased Kamudo back in 2017 while finishing up their work on Twilight Princess, which wrapped in early 2022 after 11 volumes and 58 chapters. Serialization of Kamudo finally began in the fall of 2024, with Viz Media releasing it in English at the same time.

Set in a fantasy world, Kamudo introduces demi-dragons, mythical beings who kept peace until the first human emerged from a magical egg. This child, named Kamuna, grows up to become a threat to the balance of the world.

The story blends fantastical creatures with adventure, creating a unique universe separate from Zelda but familiar in tone.

Himekawa’s years of work on Zelda adaptations have shown their skill in building rich fantasy worlds. Their take on Link and Midna’s relationship in Twilight Princess stood out, earning praise for giving the characters more depth than the games.

The duo’s detailed art style also played a huge role, adding personality to every character and bringing Zelda’s iconic settings to life.

With Kamudo, Himekawa is free to craft their own story, no longer tied to Nintendo’s material. While the new series isn’t Zelda, it promises a similar sense of adventure and discovery. For those who loved Himekawa’s take on Zelda, Kamudo could be the next big fantasy hit.
