Legendary Director Gus Van Sant Joins LGBTQ+ Thriller ‘Antinous,’ a Modern-Day Take on the Life of Emperor Hadrian’s Lover
Gus Van Sant, the acclaimed filmmaker behind Good Will Hunting and Milk, is now supporting the psychosexual thriller Antinous. This modern-day drama is inspired by the life and tragic death of Antinous, the beloved companion of the Roman emperor Hadrian.
The film will be the directorial debut of visual artist Stuart Sandford, who also wrote the script. Antinous follows the journey of a contemporary young actor who becomes convinced that he is the reincarnation of Antinous. The story weaves ancient Roman grandeur with Hollywood’s fixation on youth, beauty, and eternal fame.
In a statement for Variety, Van Sant shared his excitement, saying, ‘I’m thrilled to see Stuart Sandford, a brilliant photographer and sculptor, bring this historical relationship to life on screen.‘
Stuart Sandford, the film’s writer and director, expressed his deep connection to the story. ‘Antinous has fascinated me for over ten years. His story, which blends classical themes with modern-day issues of identity, desire, and fame, resonates strongly today,’ he said for Variety. ‘This film will explore those enduring struggles and the risks of living authentically under oppressive systems.’
The film is being produced by Dreamtown’s Ben Charles Edwards and Kirsty Bell, with executive production by Phil McKenzie. Filming is set to begin in the second quarter of this year, with locations in London, Los Angeles, and Greece, in partnership with Goldfinch Entertainment.
Producer Ben Charles Edwards highlighted the importance of this project in his statement for Variety, saying, ‘Antinous’ story has remained hidden for too long. His life and untimely death have echoed through history, yet few know about him. This film sheds light on his struggles, which are as relevant today as they were back then.’
