Lenovo is stepping into the handheld gaming scene with its new Legion Go S, set to launch in May 2025 at $499. This device stands out as the first third-party handheld officially licensed to run Valve’s SteamOS, the same operating system that powers the popular Steam Deck.

The Legion Go S features an 8-inch variable refresh rate screen, offering smooth visuals during gameplay. Under the hood, it boasts the new AMD Ryzen Z2 Go chip, exclusive to Lenovo, aiming to deliver robust performance for modern games. The device also includes 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD, providing ample space for game storage.

In terms of design, Lenovo has opted for a more traditional handheld layout, removing the detachable gamepads and kickstand found in its predecessor. This results in a lighter device with a sculpted grip, enhancing comfort during extended play sessions. Additional features include RGB lighting around the joysticks, a larger 55Wh battery, and improved triggers with adjustable throws.

For those preferring a Windows experience, Lenovo plans to release a Windows 11 version of the Legion Go S earlier, in January 2025, priced at $729.99. This model will come with 32 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD, catering to users seeking higher specifications.

Valve is not limiting SteamOS to its own hardware. The company has announced plans to release a beta version of SteamOS for other handheld devices after March 2025, aiming to expand its ecosystem and provide more options for gamers.

The collaboration between Lenovo and Valve marks a significant step in the handheld gaming market, offering consumers more choices and potentially setting a precedent for future devices. With competitive pricing and a focus on user experience, the Legion Go S is poised to be a strong contender in the portable gaming arena.
