Marina Squerciati Reveals Why She Was Absent from ‘Chicago P.D.’
Kim Burgess, played by Marina Squerciati, had a lighter presence in the first two episodes of Chicago P.D.‘s Season 12, as the show returned in fall 2024, as you probably remember. While Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) struggled with the loss of his partner, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) had already left the team, leaving viewers wondering about Burgess’ role.
As it turned out, Squerciati was away because she was secretly pregnant and gave birth to her second child. She later shared this news on Instagram, explaining that her absence wasn’t planned, but was tied to her pregnancy. She also posted a funny picture of her daughter’s unique interpretation of her experience.
Some fans worried Squerciati might be leaving the show due to her short absence. She reassured everyone in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, clarifying that it was nothing serious. ‘We all had two episodes off this season, so mine just happened to be the first two,’ she said.
The Instagram post was shared as an end-of-the-year post, and in it, everything was properly explained:
Season 12 is important for her character as she moves up the ranks to become a detective. However, things aren’t easy. Her future with the team is uncertain because she’s keeping a secret about Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar).
As for her personal life, she’s set to marry Ruzek this season, but there are complications. Squerciati mentioned a storyline involving Ruzek’s father, ‘Disco Bob’ (Jack Coleman), which might cause some tension between them before the wedding.
Catch Burgess’ journey when Chicago P.D. returns on January 8 at 10 p.m. ET on NBC. You can catch up on the previous episodes on Peacock.
