Martial Arts Novel Series 'Garōden' to Receive Anime Adaptation on Netflix, Premiere Date Revealed!

And while Netflix’s anime roster is certainly diverse, it seems that the streaming service is definitely focusing on fighting series. We know that Baki is one of the platform’s most important hits, and there are also the likes of Kengan Ashura and Record of Ragnarok, both of which are focused on fighting. Now, as it has been confirmed today, another martial arts anime series is coming to the streaming service, as an anime adaptation of the Garōden novel series by Baku Yumemakura is going to premiere on May 23, 2024.

This news was confirmed by Netflix today, along with the release of a trailer and some production information. It has also been confirmed that the anime adaptation is going to be titled Garouden: The Way of the Lone Wolf.

This was a relatively surprising announcement by Netflix, who announced the premiere and released a trailer just a month before the premiere, which is not usual for the streaming service. Before we give you more information, here is the trailer:

The anime will be directed by Atsushi Ikariya (Sabikui Bisco) and produced by the studio NAZ. Other known staff members for the anime include Yutaka Matsubara (Sabikui Bisco) and Hitomi Takechi (Sabikui Bisco) as main animators and Daisuke Mataga (Sabikui Bisco) as assistant director. As for the cast members, only one name has been revealed so far, that of Ryota Takeuchi, who is going to provide the voice of the main character, Juzo Fujimaki.

Based on the trailer, the anime seems to be promising, and fans of martial arts anime series will definitely enjoy this addition to Netflix’s slate. In case you’re not fully familiar with the plot of this series, here is a short official synopsis that will help you understand what you can expect from the series:

Based on the novel series by Baku Yumemakura, this new anime depicts a man’s tale of conviction, sorrow, and conflict.

At the heart of the action is Juzo Fujimaki, a rival of Bunshichi Tanba, the main protagonist of the original novels. On the run from his troubled past, Juzo is forced into competing in a deadly underground fighting tournament. Skilled in the respected martial art Takemiya-ryu, Juzo must navigate a path filled with formidable foes and his personal demons — all while dealing with a bounty of three million yen on his head and a determined detective on his trail.
