Is Martian Manhunter Coming to the DCU? James Gunn's Latest Tweet Hints at the Possibility!

Warner Bros., the firm that holds the rights to the characters in DC Comics, wanted to develop its own MCU after observing how popular Disney’s franchise became, which is why the DCEU was originally established. Despite its great perspective, star power, and some very amazing films, the DCEU was destined to collapse before its time because far too many bad decisions and miscalculated choices were made along the way.

Then, Zack Snyder, the previous head of the DCEU, was “called “fired” and James Gunn was called in to replace him as the head of the project. When Gunn took over the DCEU, everything was in utter disorder, so he made the decision to start over and create a new fictional universe (the DCU), whose first phase, titled Gods and Monsters, already started.

Now, we know that Gunn is working on a solo Superman film set to be released next year, which will also serve as the main movie of the first phase, and while we know a lot about the movie, it seems that Gunn could still provide us with some surprises if the recent tease is more than just that.

As stated, the main cast of the Superman movie is more or less known, and as far as the public is concerned, the character of Martian Manhunter, also known as J’onn J’onzz, won’t be in the movie. That is okay, as the character will probably appear at a later date, but not in the Superman movie. Or? Take a look at the following:

And then the guy drops this. In case you don’t know what this is, the Chocos is DC’s version of Oreo cookies, created solely to avoid any copyright infringement issues with the company that owns Oreos. They’re the same, so there’s no difference, but they have a different name. Why are they important and how are they related to Martian Manhunter?

Well, J’onzz is known for his “addiction” to Chocos, as he is constantly eating them (like Shazam!), and one comic even confirmed that he suffered withdrawal symptoms when he would not eat them for a while. This is why many fans believe that Gunn is teasing the appearance of the Martian Manhunter in one of the upcoming projects, most likely Superman, although it is possible that the character appears in Peacemaker Season 2 as well.

As stated, the character has not been cast publically, so Gunn is either keeping it a secret – and is doing a great job with it – or he is simply teasing us to provoke us a bit. Chocos are an important part of DC’s role, so maybe they will be featured in the upcoming projects, regardless of Martian Manhunter.
