Michael Mann, known for directing Ferrari and Heat, has long kept quiet about his second film, The Keep. Released in 1983, this fantasy-horror film was heavily edited by the studio, which undermined Mann’s distinctive, dreamlike approach to the story. The plot centers around Nazis seeking the help of a Jewish historian to avoid destruction, blending supernatural horror with historical elements.
Unlike Mann’s usual neo-noir crime dramas about professionals, The Keep stands out as an unusual entry in his career. Though the film has largely faded into obscurity, its bold and unique style has left a lasting impression.
The studio’s extensive cuts resulted in a final act that is almost impossible to follow, turning the film into a confusing jumble of scenes. Despite this, The Keep has developed a cult following over the years and is now being released in 4K UHD/Blu-ray for the first time, thanks to a new Limited Edition Slipcase set from Vinegar Syndrome.
The story centers on a group of Nazis who, while occupying an ancient Romanian fortress in 1941, inadvertently release a dark force known as Radu Molasar. Molasar then manipulates a frail Jewish historian, Theodore Cuza, into aiding his escape. However, their actions also awaken a mysterious and powerful stranger, who embarks on a mission to confront the unleashed evil.
When The Keep was first released, it received mixed reviews. Critics criticized its confusing plot but praised its stunning visuals. While it struggled at the U.S. box office, the film eventually developed a dedicated fanbase.
Although it was released on home video, it wasn’t until 2020 that the film saw a proper DVD release, when Australia’s Via Vision launched a remastered edition.
