Miramax is bringing back The Faculty, the 1998 sci-fi thriller that turned into a cult favorite. The new version is in the works, with Robert Rodriguez, the original film’s director, on board as a producer.

The script is being written by Drew Hancock, a rising talent whose debut movie, Companion, hits theaters this weekend. His work has already received strong early reviews. The remake is being produced by BoulderLight, the company behind Barbarian and Zach Cregger’s upcoming horror film Weapons.

The original movie followed a group of high school students who realized their teachers and school staff were hiding a terrifying secret. It featured a screenplay by Kevin Williamson and a cast that included Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Clea DuVall, Jordana Brewster, Shawn Hatosy, Usher Raymond, and even Jon Stewart before his Daily Show days.

The film earned $63.2 million at the box office and has maintained a loyal fan base over the years.

Rodriguez has been busy, recently directing Spy Kids: Armageddon for Netflix and the Ben Affleck-led thriller Hypnotic. His other well-known projects include El Mariachi, Sin City, and From Dusk Till Dawn.

Miramax has been making changes, with Jonathan Glickman now leading the company as CEO after taking over from Bill Block. The studio has been focused on reviving its library, which includes Chicago, No Country for Old Men, The English Patient, and Scary Movie. Speaking of reboots, a new version of Scary Movie is also in development and is set to release in 2026.
