Monogatari Watch Order
Bakemonogatari is the first anime adaptation of the novel written by Nisio Isin. It was directed by Akiyuki Shumbo and Tatsuya Oishi and written by Fuyashi To’. The first broadcast of this movie series was in Japan on July 3rd, 2009. It has up to 15 episodes, with the first 12 broadcasted on TV while the remaining three were distributed on the official website by June 25th, 2010.
This series follows the experience of a young high school boy by the name of Koyomi Aragagi, who, after being bitten by a vampire in his third year in high school, was luckily able to return to his human nature with the help of a man named Meme Oshiro leaving some of the vampire traits in him.
This is the third adaptation of the novel series but the second from the anime studio. Furthermore, this is the first series directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who eventually directed the rest of the TV series. In contrast, the director of the first TV series did more development than the other possible series.
It is a transition of what happened in Bakemonogatari. This sequel continues with the story of Koyomi Araragi as he continues with his relationships with the other characters in the series, just that this series focuses more on supernatural events. But in this 2nd series, Koyomi Araragi was no longer the main focus but his two younger sisters Karen Araragi and Tsukihi Araragi. It aired from January 8th to March 18th in Japan with a total of 11 episodes.
3. Nekomonogatari Kuro
Nekomonogatari Kuro, which is otherwise known as Nekomonogatari Black, is the third studio adaptation of Monogatari. It was released on three different locations, including the video host site Nico, Nico Douga, and Japanese TV stations TOKYO MX and BS11 on December 31st, 2012, with just four episodes.
This series talks about how Koyomi Araragi’s friend Tsubasa Hanekawa whom he refers to as savior, began acting strangely after surviving a vampire attack. However, after noticing the bandage on her face, Koyomi opted to take a close look at the wound she sustained, but she assured him that it was just a minor injury she sustained at home.
But when a white cat with no tail is run over by a car and killed, both Koyomi and Tsubasa bury the creature, and that was when the trouble began poking out. Koyomi Araragi later decided to visit his friend Meme Oshino and told him all that had happened earlier that day. It was then he was told what they buried was an apparition.
A perfect one for the state Tsubasa is in now. It is now left for Koyomi to draft out a plan to find and help his friend from what has possessed her. Before he could find her, she had already attacked her parents. Koyomi has to act fast to prevent further tragedies.
4. Monogatari Series Second Season
This is the 4th anime studio adaptation of the Monogatari light novels. This series aired from July 6th, 2013, to December 28th in Japan with 26 episodes. However, three of those episodes were recaps, so it is 23 episodes.
It covers five volumes of the original light novels. Unfortunately, it wasn’t included in the original broadcast and was instead adapted separately months later. This story took place between the summer and winter. Strange things were manifesting around Koyomi Araragi and his group of friends.
In this second season, Koyomi Araragi’s friends Tsubasa Hanekawa, the group’s modest genius; Shinobi Oshino, the resident doughnut loving vampire; Suruga Kanbaru, the group athletic deviant; Mavoi Hachikuii, bite happy spirit guy; Nadeko Sengoku, Koyomi’s stalker and Hitagi Senjogahara, the poignant tsundere struggle to overcome the darkness that is rapidly approaching.
With the start of a new semester and graduation drawing near, Koyomi Araragi must decide on what path to thread and friends to save. But as strange things begin to unfold, Koyomi goes missing. A vicious tiger out of nowhere comes out in the absence of Koyomi.
This tiger locked focus on Tsubasa Hanekawa. Hanekawa has only two options: to either fend for herself or bow to the creature’s perspective.
Hanamonogatari is the 5th anime studio adaptation of Monogatari. Just like Nekomonogatari, Hanamonogatari has only five episodes which were all released on August 16th, 2014.
This series is about Suruga Kanbaru, who has reached the third year of high school, and all her upperclassmen friends have graduated. And rumors about a problem-solving demon in school. After investigating and meeting this strange person, she finds out that her rainy devil arm has gone missing. This series took place immediately after the events of Kizumonogatari.
This movie follows immediately as the 6th anime studio adaptation broadcast of the Monogatari series. It was released with four episodes, all premiered on December 31st, 2014, almost in the same way as Nekomonogatari Black and Hanamonogatari.
This series is filled with mouthwatering adventures as Koyomi Araragi has come to the most challenging point in his life. In the middle of preparing for his exams, Koyomi Araragi began to notice some strange changes.
His worst nightmare is beginning to dawn on him as the vampire trait in him has begun manifesting. In a bid to find a solution, he asked for help from a human-like doll and an immortal oddity specialist.
He was then given two options: to abstain and give up on using his vampire abilities or lose his humanity forever. That would be a pretty difficult choice to make.
Owarimonogatari is the 7th Monogatari anime adaptation from the studio. It has 20 episodes, with the first 13 episodes of the series being broadcast in 2015, while the last seven were broadcast two years later, which was in 2017.
The first 13 episodes adapt the first two volumes of the Owarimonogatari novel, while the other 7 covers the third volume. It is the first-ever adaptation to be released in blu-ray volumes in North America.
The Owarimonogatari series is like this because; the Western blu-ray volumes are split into three volumes the same way as the novel versions, so the last seven episodes are referred to as “volume 3”. This series talks about how Koyomi Araragi was trapped with a student Oshino Ougi whom he just met.
This followed the 7th adaptation of the Monogatari anime movie, making it the 8th. Koyomimonogatari in the novels was released before Owarimonogatari, but in the anime adaptation, it was released after and Owarimonogatari.
This time, it came as a mobile application for both iOS and mobile operating systems. It included a calendar, a few exclusive downloadable contents, and episodes of the anime adaptation in original net animation format.
This adaptation aired from January 9th, 2016, to March 26th, with twelve episodes. The episodes in this series are almost half of the episodes of a normal series, with about 14 minutes of run time.
The application ceased working after the series ended on December 31st, 2016. However, its mini-series is still available for streaming on Funimation. In this series, Koyomi Araragi is committed to helping his friends from both the natural and the supernatural world as they strive to solve their problems.
