‘My Hero Academia: Vigilantes’ Will Introduce the Anime’s Version of Batman
The anime adaptation of My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is officially on the way, set to premiere in April 2025. Announced at Jump Festa on December 21, 2024, this spinoff takes us to a time before the main series, introducing a darker, grittier side of the My Hero Academia world.
While familiar faces like All Might make appearances, they take a backseat to a unique lineup of characters. Among them is Knuckleduster, a vigilante with a no-nonsense attitude and no Quirk to rely on.
Knuckleduster’s real name is Iwao Oguro, and he’s nothing like the polished pro heroes we’re used to. Middle-aged and Quirkless, he’s carved out a niche in this world by fighting crime with martial arts, brass knuckles, and sheer grit.
This has drawn comparisons to Batman, and the series leans into that vibe. Hideyuki Furuhashi, the author of Vigilantes, has openly said Knuckleduster is to All Might what Batman is to Superman.
Knuckleduster isn’t just a brute with weapons; he’s got depth. His approach to crime-fighting is all about striking first and fast, often in the shadows, making him a terrifying figure for villains.
His catchphrase, a simple ‘I’m here,’ feels like a quiet mirror to All Might’s booming ‘I Am Here!’ This contrast makes his role as a mentor to young vigilantes like Koichi Haimawari even more interesting. He’s rough around the edges but deeply invested in guiding the next generation.
The story draws heavy inspiration from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and it shows. Knuckleduster’s world is darker and more grounded than the one All Might operates in.
Where pro heroes rely on flashy Quirks and tools, Knuckleduster fights on his own terms, often with brutal efficiency. This gives Vigilantes a raw energy that sets it apart from the main series.
Knuckleduster’s backstory is another layer to his character. While it takes time for his motivations to be revealed, they’re a big part of why he continues to fight despite the odds.
He’s also not afraid to work with others, mentoring Koichi and looking out for Pop Step, another vigilante. His dynamic with these characters is as central to Vigilantes as All Might’s bond with Deku is in the original story.
This spinoff offers a fresh perspective on the My Hero Academia world. By focusing on vigilantes like Knuckleduster, we get to explore what happens when heroes operate outside the system. With its mix of intense action and compelling characters, Vigilantes is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the franchise. And Knuckleduster? He might just steal the spotlight.
