The highly anticipated anime adaptation of Mokumokuren’s popular manga The Summer Hikaru Died (published by KADOKAWA) is coming soon to Netflix. Combining slice-of-life with a supernatural twist, the story follows Yoshiki, whose world is turned upside down when his best friend Hikaru is replaced by something that only looks and acts like him. The new teaser trailer gives fans a first glimpse into their unsettling world.
Directed by Ryohei Takeshita (Jellyfish Can’t Swim in the Night), the anime is produced by CygamesPictures.
The teaser art and trailer showcase the anime’s first look, featuring Chiaki Kobayashi as Yoshiki Tsujinaka and Shuichiro Umeda as Hikaru Indou.
Chiaki Kobayashi shared his excitement about voicing Yoshiki, highlighting the character’s emotional depth: “I’m thrilled to play Yoshiki. During the audition, I experienced a mix of fear, comfort, and uncertainty. I wanted to bring all of Yoshiki’s feelings and sadness to life.“
Shuichiro Umeda, the voice of Hikaru, described the role as a unique challenge: “Playing Hikaru felt like stepping into darkness. Despite the unknowns, one thing was clear — the strong connection with Yoshiki. I focused on that as I brought Hikaru to life.”
Director Ryohei Takeshita spoke about the process of adapting the manga: “Reading the original story was thrilling, and I thought a lot about how to bring its panels to life in animation. The team worked hard to capture the emotions of Yoshiki and Hikaru and reflect the manga’s unique and beautiful style. We’re excited to share it with everyone.”
Official synopsis: Two best friends living in a rural Japanese village: Yoshiki and Hikaru. Growing up together, they were inseparable… until the day Hikaru came back from the mountains, and was no longer himself. “Something” has taken over Hikaru’s body, memories, feelings… and everything they know begins to unravel.
