Ben Aldridge stars in the new BritBox original The Long Call, mystery series from Vera & Shetland creator Ann Cleeves, which premieres on October 28.
Rejected by his family and the Evangelical religious community known as “The Barum Brethren,” Matthew Venn (Ben Aldridge, Fleabag, Pennyworth) walked away from his hometown of North Devon twenty years ago. Now a detective, he returns to the small and deceptively sleepy community with his husband, Jonathan, both to mourn his father (at a distance) and take charge of his first major murder case.
Although the more Venn investigates, the more he finds his worlds colliding as he’s slowly drawn back into the same web he tried to escape decades earlier. Pearl Mackie (Doctor Who, upcoming Tom Jones), Juliet Stevenson (Riveria, The Hour) and Martin Shaw (Inspector George Gently, C.B. Strike) co-star.
Ann Cleeves (born 1954) is an English crime writer. In 2006 she won the Duncan Lawrie Dagger for her novel Raven Black. Cleeves was born in Herefordshire and brought up in north Devon where she attended Barnstaple Grammar School; she studied English at the University of Sussex but dropped out and then took up various jobs including cook at the Fair Isle bird observatory, auxiliary coastguard, probation officer, library outreach worker and child care officer. She lives in Whitley Bay, and is widowed with two daughters.
Created by Ann Cleeves (Vera, Shetland) and directed by Lee Haven Jones (Doctor Who, The Bay), The Long Call premieres 10/28 on BritBox
