Sci-fi fans will know that Doctor Who is a brand series and a cult classic. The original series appeared in 1963 and has had several iterations since then, with the most recent, fourteenth season premiering tomorrow, on May 11, 2024 on BBC and Disney. The most recent series will see Ncuti Gatwa take on the role of the Doctor by becoming the Fifteenth Doctor and Jodie Whittaker’s successor as the program’s lead. The casting has caused a lot of controversy and backlash among fans, but it seems that the critics love it, as the series has received a 100% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes!
Critics have had the chance to see some of the episodes before the initial premiere, so these critics’ reviews come from people who’ve actually seen the episode, unlike the early fan “reviews,” which were based on nothing, seeing how the series has yet to premiere for the general public.
Although it is the fourteenth series, the upcoming season of Doctor Who is dubbed Season 1 because of the production changes and the fact that Disney has also acquired the distribution rights. This is not strange for the franchise, but it signals that the series has entered a completely new phase of its evolution, just like it did when Gatiss and Moffat revived it. And while Ncuti Gatwa had his debut in the December 2023 special, his tenure officially begins tomorrow.
We would like to remind you that the casting of Ncuti Gatwa caused a lot of backlash. The Scottish actor came out as Queer in 2023, and after Jodie Whittaker, who became the first female Doctor, we now have the first Black doctor as well; it remains to be seen whether the character is going to be Queer as well, but Gatwa is the first openly Queer actor to portray the Doctor. But that is not really relevant, is it? The focus should be on his performance and not his biography, and it seems that the critics – who are always trying to be objective and impartial – are amazed by the former!
The critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is summarized as follows: “Ncuti Gatwa’s dashing interpretation of The Doctor brings a breath of fresh air aboard the TARDIS, piloting this perennial sci-fi series into an exciting new era.” The series as a whole received a 100% Certified Fresh rating, which definitely has us excited. On Metacritic, the series also has an accumulated 72/100 rating without any negative reviews.
As for the fans’ comments, the upcoming series had been a victim of review bombing on Rotten Tomatoes, which is why the site locked fans out from reviewing the series until the premiere. On Metacritic, it has a horrible audience rating, but the site doesn’t have such measures in place. We can only reiterate that these reviews are 100% unreliable, as the series has not even been released, which means that they are pure review bombing.
We are, of course, going to keep following this story, as well as the whole series, so be sure to keep following us for all the latest news and updates about the upcoming Doctor Who series, which is certainly going to be talked about in the upcoming weeks, after the May 11 premiere.
