In a press conference held earlier today at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Makoto Shinkai revealed that his new movie “Suzume no Tojimari” will be coming to theatres in Fall 2022.

It has been three years since Shinkai’s last movie, Weathering With You, graced us with its magnificence. This is actually not even that big of an exaggeration considering that it went on to become Japan’s #7 highest-earning domestic film of all time, as well as the highest-grossing film in 2019.

Makoto Shinkai is truly an astounding filmmaker and author, and I’m confident in saying that there isn’t a single anime fan who hasn’t heard of his brilliance. His previous works include 5 Centimeters Per Second, Voices of a Distant Star, She and Her Cat, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, The Garden of Words, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, and, of course, Your Name.

Your Name is one of the most popular anime films to ever be released. Since it premiered in August 2016, Your Name became the fifth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan and the third highest-grossing anime film. Now, from the man behind these extremely popular movies, comes another potential gem. What is the story behind “Suzume no Tojimari”?

The story follows Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu. One day she meets a young man who’s looking for a “door”. Deciding to follow the man, Suzume comes across an old door in the ruins in the mountains. She ends up opening the door which resulted in doors opening all across Japan, bringing disasters from the other side. The film follows Suzume as she attempts to close all the havoc-wreaking doors on a path of liberation and growth.

More information on the film will probably be released on the “Suzume no Tojimari” official website.
