Superman knows it’s only a matter of time before Doomsday escapes containment at Supercorp. In Superman (2023) #21 by Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora, his anxiety hangs over everything—even a quiet date night with Lois Lane. But before that moment arrives, a mysterious new villain appears, calling themselves the Aftermath, and they want Doomsday turned over to them.

The Aftermath stands out immediately. They claim their outfit is ceremonial, but it looks exactly like the suit Doomsday wore when he first arrived in Superman: The Man of Steel (1991) #18 by Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, and Dennis Janke.

Back then, Doomsday smashed through barriers while wrapped in a strange alien suit, which only tore apart later in a brutal fight. Once revealed, his monstrous form stunned everyone, but his suit’s purpose was never explained in the original arc.

That backstory came later in Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey (1994) by Dan Jurgens and Brett Breeding. We learned Doomsday was a Kryptonian bioweapon called the Ultimate, created to survive anything.

When the Ultimate wiped out life across the galaxy, the people of Calaton defeated him by sealing his body in funerary bindings and launching it into space. That’s the same outfit he wore when crashing on Earth.

Now it’s clear that the Aftermath comes from Calaton. They’re descendants of the civilization that stopped Doomsday long ago, along with survivors of the destruction he caused. This deep connection to Superman’s past adds a lot to the story. Calaton’s people might even hold the key to stopping Doomsday for good.

It’s refreshing to see Superman’s newest adventures tie so smoothly into iconic moments like The Death of Superman and Doomsday’s origin. These callbacks don’t feel forced—they show respect for decades of storytelling while keeping things fresh. With Aftermath in play, this storyline could give Superman one of his best showdowns in years.
