When comic books were ushered into a new era in the 1980s, it was Batman who was the only major superhero that dared push the limits even further. Thanks to Frank Miller’s game-changing The Dark Knight Returns, the comic books were pushed into a darker and more complex era. Of course, we cannot ignore Miller’s other works as well as Alan Moore’s contribution, but Batman remains the biggest name on this list.
Of course, this turned the once-campy superhero into a pillar of pioneering stories that showed how comic books are not simply entertainment, but also a genuine art form that dares to explore the boundaries, as well as push them further with each new work.
This brought us some memorable and somewhat twisted stories over time, and one of the most recent ones will see Batman face a threat like none before, as his new enemy is a serial killer whose twisted methods remind us of the Jigsaw Killer from the Saw franchise.
The series we are talking about is Batman: Dark Patterns, whose current arc – “We Are Wounded” – will reach its end in the upcoming third issue of the comic book.
In it, as you might know, Batman is working on the case of a dangerous serial killer known as the Wound Man, whose methods are not unlike those used by John Kramer in the Saw series. And while the World’s Greatest Detective is working the case, this happens:
Brought to us by Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman, the image seemingly suggests that Batman himself has become the latest victim of the dangerous Wound Man, which leaves the fate of the Dark Knight up in the air.
While we have no doubt that Batman will somehow find a way to get out of this sharp mess (pun intended) and solve the case, it will definitely be interesting to see how Watters and Sherman explore that story. The official teaser synopsis reveals the following:
SOME WOUNDS NEVER HEAL… Case 01: We Are Wounded — Part III Batman is in the dark now, amid the accumulated devastation and suffering at the root of Wound Man’s grotesque reign of terror. Can the Dark Knight bring it all to an end before the twisted killer claims another life? Don’t miss the end of We Are Wounded!
As we said, this reminded many of our colleagues of the plot of Saw and we actually agree. Batman if, of course, no stranger to complex and elaborate traps, as well as cases (we know that the Riddler has put him through over the years), but this is definitely a new challenge whose conclusion we cannot wait to see. Batman: Dark Patterns #3 is available February 12th, 2025 from DC Comics!
