As you’ll probably know, Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s most popular series. The erotic period drama has captured the attention and imagination of many fans around the world, proving once more that sex – indeed – does sell! The series is based on the eponymous novel series by Julia Quinn, with the first season premiering on December 25, 2020. The series is currently in its third season, whose first part was released only recently, and in it, the series has continued to push boundaries like it did in previous seasons. In Season 3, Irish actress Nicola Coughlan has become one of the leads and this has caused a lot of controversy.

Namely, the former Derry Girls star has been criticized because of her appearance, and many thought that Bridgerton had gone too far with making her the female lead in Season 3, especially in light of the large number of erotic scenes in the series. But it seems that Coughlan doesn’t care for this and that she herself significantly contributed to the boundary-pushing boldness of the series.

Coughlan is portraying Penelope Featherington, the youngest Featherington daughter and close friend of Eloise Bridgerton. She has been around since Season 1 when it was revealed that she is actually the author Lady Whistledown. Penelope has finally received her moment in the spotlight and Coughlan has been quite open about it, as well as about the spicy scenes that await her character.

She has been a victim of body shaming due to her physical appearance, but that did not stop anyone, as Netflix stood behind its actress and the series finally gave the character a chance to shine. Coughlan has been open about these scenes, and she has actually said that she insisted on some of them and that it felt great! Here’s what she said:

“I specifically asked for certain lines and moments to be included. There’s one scene where I’m very naked on camera, and that was my idea, my choice. It just felt like the biggest ‘f**k you’ to all the conversation surrounding my body; it was amazingly empowering. I felt beautiful in the moment, and I thought: ‘When I’m 80, I want to look back on this and remember how f**king hot I looked!”

But, to be frank, it seems that it was a rough transition from being a secondary character to jumping into the empowering eroticism of Bridgerton. In an earlier interview, she actually said that she had a lot of reservations about filming nude scenes, but she managed to get over it and feel comfortable with her own nudity, as the above-cited quote confirms. This is what she said in the earlier interview:

“I went to the bathroom and looked in the full-length mirror. I was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ I hid it down the bottom of the laundry basket. I was like, ‘How am I going to do this?’ By the end of the day, we were both lying under a blanket, not clothed, just chillin’. We were like, ‘This is why nudists do it’.”
