Nintendo Holds Its Ground on Switch 2 Plans Despite Leaks and Sales Slump
Nintendo is known for its careful planning and strict schedules. Even with recent leaks about the upcoming Switch 2, the company isn’t changing its plans. Krysta Yang, who led the Switch launch campaign, believes Nintendo has a set date and won’t move it.
Yang’s view is shared by Kit Ellis, a former Nintendo marketing director. He thinks Nintendo will stick to its original schedule. Ellis and Yang have looked at the calendar and see possible times for an announcement before the end of January. However, they don’t know the exact date. Ellis suggests Nintendo might avoid the U.S. inauguration but sees other good dates after CES week.
Ellis also points out that Nintendo prefers long-term planning over quick reactions. Reacting to leaks could cause problems. While the leaks are uncomfortable, Ellis believes they’ll be forgotten after the official announcement, especially since no games or software details have leaked.
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has said there’s no change to the plan to announce the Switch 2 by March 2025. This statement came after a 31% drop in Switch sales in the three months up to September 2024. Despite lower sales and pressure from investors and fans, Nintendo is sticking to its timeline.
Analysts think an announcement in 2024 is unlikely. They believe announcing a new console during the holiday shopping season could hurt current sales. So, any new announcements this year will probably be about smaller products, not the next console.
In summary, despite leaks and falling sales, Nintendo is committed to its original plan for the Switch 2 announcement. The company values careful planning and isn’t likely to change its schedule due to external pressures.
