He was born twenty-eight years before the current timeline but traveled twenty years into the future while still eight years old. He became a prominent character in the Wano County arc because of his endeavor, which is why One Piece fans keep talking about him. In this article, we are going to discuss what happened in Episode 1078 of One Piece, which was the conclusion of the Wano Country Arc and which saw Momonosuke become the new shogun of Wano Country.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • Kozuki Momonosuke is the son of Kozuki Oden, who later became an ally of Luffy’s and raided Wano Country with him in the hope of taking down Kaido.
  • After helping Luffy fight Kaido and saving the Flowery Capital from a falling Onigashima, he succeeded his father as the new Shogun of Wano Country.

Momonosuke is the son of Kozuki Oden, the former shogun of Wano Country

Momonosuke was born twenty-six years before the story begins on board the Moby Dick. Two years later, with his father’s entry into the Roger Pirates, his family moved to the Oro Jackson, seeing many sights of the Grand Line. Two years later, his mother fell ill right near Wano, and on the orders of the on-board doctor, she was prevented from continuing the journey. For this reason, her two sons also remained with her, and Inuarashi and Nekomamushi also remained on her island.

The following year, Oden returned and was reunited with his family. Eighteen years before the beginning of the narrative, Shimotsuki Yasuie and his men went to Kuri Castle to protect the family of Oden, who had gone together with his Nine Red Scabbards to face the enemy. However, the ten samurai were defeated and captured by Kaido’s crew and then sentenced to death. Orochi and Kaido executed Oden while the Hundred Beast Pirates burned down Kuri Castle.

Kaido reached the building and punched Toki to grab Momonosuke by the neck and throw him off the roof. When the emperor said to him that his father was an idiot, Momonosuke replied that he was a great warrior, that one day he too would become one, and that he would reign over the nation. He then burst into tears, and Kaido decided to leave him to die in the fire. Toki, however, told him that she would use his powers to send him and four servants twenty years into the future.

Momonosuke replied, in tears, that he couldn’t do it, while his mother said she was sure the Kozuki family would be resurrected by then. He begged her to go with them and bring Hiyori as well, but Kin’emon told him that Toki was suffering more than him. He added that theirs was a country of samurai where dishonor was paid with life, and contradicting such a determined woman was only a cause for shame.

Momonosuke replied that he was but a child, so the samurai bowed apologetically before saying that the youth had abandoned him with Oden’s death. The tearful Kin’emon asked him for the opportunity to fight, preferring to die by the sword rather than in a burning castle, pleading for him to grant them a place to die as warriors. Momonosuke was, therefore, convinced and crying goodbye to his mother, who was also in tears. Toki then used his abilities to send them to the future.

He would later meet the crew during the Punk Hazard Arc and also participated in the Dressrossa Arc, as well as the Zou Arc, which made him an ally of the Straw Hat Pirates and, ultimately, allowed him to fight with them in Wano.

After Kaido’s demise, Momonosuke finally became the new shogun of Wano Country

Later, when he reaches his home island and goes to the ruins of his father’s castle, where he is reunited with Kin’emon, Kiku, Luffy, Law, Nami, Sanji, Chopper, Brook, Carrot, Shachi, and Penguin. The group then enters the ruins, where Kin’emon explains to the others that he, Momonosuke, Kanjuro, Raizo, and Kiku are actually from twenty years ago. The samurai recounts the events of the past and how the five were separated and then summarizes the situation. Counting the various groups involved, they have around five thousand people on their side.

The plan is to simply gather information for two weeks and then, during the night of the fire festival, attack Onigashima, where Kaido resides. Kin’emon states that an ordinary boat will be enough to reach Onigashima since it is clearly visible from the coasts of the country of Wa, to go unnoticed. At the same time, Kiku explains that the fire festival is an event organized by the capital’s inhabitants to celebrate Kaido and that the shogun Kurozumi Orochi also participates.

Kin’emon also instructs the others on how to track down the allies, informs them of Franky and Robin’s roles in the plan and the ones they will have to fill, and then uses his powers to give them disguises. He thus calls the kunoichi, who will be their guide, and reveals that the first objective will be to gather three samurai essential to their cause. Suddenly, the sky becomes dark and threatening, and a gigantic dragon appears: it is Kaido, whose appearance shocks Momonosuke.

Later in the arc, he participates in Luffy’s fight against Kaido, helping the Straw Hat Captain fight the Emperor; both end up being in their dragon forms, making the battle all the more intense. But, Momonosuke could not help Luffy defeat Kaido and soon left the fight to save the Flower Capital from a falling Onigashima. As Luffy was defeating Kaido with the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika and Gear 5, Momonosuke and Yamamoto were working on saving the Flower Capital, and Momonosuke was ultimately able to use his powers to save the capital and land Onigashima safely.

Shortly after, Yamato congratulates him, who then mentally contacts Zunesha, stating that he has thought about opening the borders of Wano but decided against it, so the elephant replies that he has understood, that he will not oppose his will and that he will not doubt his decisions. Momonosuke then thanks him and senses what appears to be an earthquake: the underwater volcano off Udon erupts, and the citizens are panicking, also noticing Onigashima’s new location.

Momonosuke reaches the Flower Capital to calm them down and, after specifying that he is not Kaido and that the latter has been defeated, he transforms back into human: his servants come out of the smoke, and the citizens recognize Komurasaki and Kyoshiro, who declaims the arrival of the new shogun of Wano Country. The inhabitants then prepare video cameras to broadcast the unusual event throughout the nation, whose inhabitants see what Toki predicted twenty years earlier come true.

The servants of the Kozuki family and his sister bow to him, who gives a speech in which he introduces himself as Oden’s son, underlining that twenty years have passed since his death and thanking the inhabitants for resisting for so long. He then explains that they will be able to trade and drink again, water will be free, factories will no longer pollute, and there will be no more slaves.

He adds that the crimes of Orochi and Kaido belong to the past, revealing that the ninja-pirate-mink-samurai Alliance attacked Onigashima, defeating the Pirates of a Hundred Beasts and underlining that they will never forget the debt towards those who made it possible. He then asks Kin’emon for a suggestion on what to say, who tells him to try to lie as best he can, so he remembers when Luffy questioned him if there could still be something that scared him.

He then shouts that his name means “without equal” and states that he will make even the most barren lands a paradise, so he asks the inhabitants to lend him their strength, revealing that he has traveled twenty years into the future to save them. He then claims to be the rightful shogun, thinking that he will maintain his mother’s promise and follow in his father’s footsteps. As Hiyori hugs him, all the citizens celebrate. He later reveals to the inhabitants that a new celebration is imminent.
