The latest season of Cobra Kai took a dark turn in its final episodes. The Sekai Taikai tournament quickly spiraled into chaos, leading to an all-out brawl between rival dojos. In the middle of the fight, Kwon Jae-Sung (Brandon H. Lee) attacked Sam LaRusso (Mary Mouser). But Axel Kovačević (Patrick Luwis), who had bonded with Sam earlier, stepped in to defend her.

During the struggle, Kwon tried to use John Kreese’s (Martin Kove) eunjangdo blade but lost his footing, accidentally impaling himself. This shocking moment left fans in disbelief and set up what’s sure to be an intense final stretch of the series.

Patrick Luwis, who plays Axel, shared his thoughts on the moment. ‘At first, I wasn’t even told directly how things would unfold. I only had the first couple of scripts, and I heard rumors that my character would be involved in Kwon’s death. When I finally saw the full script, I realized how huge this moment was. The show has always had fight sequences, but this one was on a whole different level. So many characters, so many stories colliding—it was a lot to take in.’

When asked how fans reacted to Axel’s role in Kwon’s death, Luwis admitted opinions were mixed. ‘Some people say it wasn’t his fault, that Kwon did it to himself. Others are just upset that they lost a character they loved, so they blame Axel. But I think that’s good. It gets people talking.’

Luwis also shared what it was like working with experienced actors like Lewis Tan. ‘You learn just by watching them. When you work with people who bring such strong energy, it pushes you to bring your best, too. It was an amazing experience.’

With Axel showing signs of caring for Sam, some fans wonder if there’s a chance he could end up with her, despite her relationship with Miguel (Xolo Maridueña). Luwis stayed neutral. ‘I was open to whatever the story needed. I didn’t want to be the one breaking up the show’s main couple, but I think the dynamic between Axel and Sam added something interesting.

Kwon’s death will have a major impact going into the final episodes, especially for Axel. ‘This is the first time we’ve seen a young character die in the show, and it’s going to change things. There’s a lot of growth coming for Axel, and I think fans will be interested in where his journey goes.’

As for what’s next, Luwis would love to see more of Axel’s story. ‘A spinoff about the Iron Dragons would be cool. Maybe even a prequel. I don’t know what the creators have planned, but I’d be thrilled to dive back in.’
