‘Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’ Brings Chaos and Charm in New Trailer
SEGA and RGG Studios recently hosted a Like a Dragon Direct, unveiling fresh details about ‘Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’. This game continues the story from ‘Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’, introducing Goro Majima as the main character. After losing his memory, Majima becomes a pirate captain, leading his crew on daring adventures across land and sea.
The game features a beat ’em up combat system, reminiscent of earlier titles in the series. Majima can switch between two fighting styles: ‘Mad Dog’, his fast-paced signature technique, and ‘Sea Dog’, which lets him use dual cutlasses and pistols. A notable addition is the ability to jump and perform mid-air combos, adding a new layer to the combat experience.
Players will explore various locations, including Rich Island, Madlantis, Nele Island, and Honolulu. Each area offers unique challenges and narratives, enhancing the game’s depth.
Beyond ground combat, players can assemble a pirate crew and upgrade their ship, the Goromaru. This vessel is essential for open-sea exploration and engaging in real-time naval battles with other pirate ships. Players can also board enemy vessels to confront their crews and captains directly.
The game brings back popular minigames like Karaoke, Crazy Delivery, and Dragon Kart. Additionally, a new side activity, ‘Masaru’s Love Journey’, focuses on Majima recruiting ‘Minato girls’ to accompany Masaru Fujita, one of the game’s characters. Players can also enjoy retro 8-bit games from past Sega systems, such as Poseidon Wars 3D, Space Harrier 3D, and Star Jacker. The arcade game The Ocean Hunter is also available to play.
Set six months after ‘Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’, the story follows Majima as he navigates conflicts involving Hawaiian pirates and former yakuza members from Japan. Alongside new characters like Noah Rich, Jason Rich, and Masaru Fujita, familiar faces such as Taiga Saejima and Nishida return, enriching the narrative.
Initially developed as a standalone expansion to ‘Infinite Wealth’, the game’s success led to its evolution into a full-fledged title. Director Masayoshi Yokoyama mentioned that the positive reception of ‘Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name’ encouraged deeper development of the series. Choosing Hawaii as a primary location allowed the team to explore new settings beyond traditional Japanese locales.
‘Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’ is scheduled for release on February 21, 2025, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. With its unique blend of yakuza and pirate themes, the game promises an exciting and unconventional adventure for players.
