Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Legendaries Are Rideable

We just learned new information regarding the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games that are going to be the newest additions to the Pokémon franchise. Of course, we learned the details from the recent Pokémon Presents event on August 3, 2022. And the Pokémon Presents event allowed us to see a sneak preview of what players are going to experience when Scarlet and Violet finally get released.

One of the things that we are excited about is the fact that it is quite apparent that you get your hands on the main or the cover legendaries of the games early on. The legendaries, called Koraidon (Scarlet) and Miraidon (Violet), are going to be your companions early on in the game due to the fact that you can actually ride them. Yes, that’s right. The cover legendaries are rideable in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and we’ll go through the details of what the game has in store.

Who Are The Main Legendaries of Pokémon Scarlet And Violet?

Like most of the other past games in the Pokémon franchise, the featured Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet are the legendaries that you will encounter throughout the course of the game. This has been a trend ever since Pokémon Gold and Silver, where both Ho-Oh and Lugia were featured on the covers of the game. In that regard, we already knew what to expect when we saw the cover Pokémon of Scarlet and Violet.

However, we got to learn more about these Pokémon during the Pokémon Presents event by the Pokémon Company on August 3, 2022. The event allowed us to learn not only about the legendaries but also the different features that the game will have. But the main legendary Pokémon still got our attention. So, who are the main legendaries of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet?

The main legendaries of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are Koraidon and Miraidon, respectively. Koraidon seems to be more of a dinosaur-like dragon Pokémon (as hinted by korai, which means ancient in Japanese). Meanwhile, Miraidon is the more futuristic mech-type Pokémon (as hinted by mirai, which means future in Japanese). Of course, they both share the same “raidon” name, which is a combination of “ride” and “don” (which is Spanish for “lord”).

Of course, while we were able to learn more about the legendaries in the Pokémon Presents event, the one thing that caught our attention was the fact that it seems like you get to meet and acquire them early on in the game. But for a different reason.

You Can Ride Koraidon And Miraidon In Pokémon Scarlet And Violet

The biggest reveal that we saw regarding the legendaries in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet was the fact that both Koraidon and Miraidon are rideable, depending on which game you have. This seems to be something new to the series, as some fans were wondering how the player is going to traverse the entire continent of Paldea in an open-world setting.

Of course, riding Pokémon isn’t something new to the series because we saw this in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, which was the first game to unveil a semi-open world setting that seemed to be the precursor to the true open world setup in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. In Arceus, we were able to ride certain Pokémon that excelled in their own fields. For example, Wyrdeer excels at running fast on land, but you need to ride Braviary if you want to fly.

However, in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, both Koraidon and Miraidon are your rideable Pokémon. It seems like you are given the ability to ride these legendary Pokémon at the very start of the game or perhaps near the beginning.

That means that there is a good chance that you will acquire either Koraidon or Miraidon, whichever copy of the game you have, near the start of the game. And the very reason is the fact that you would need something to ride to travel the large world of Paldea without having to rely on your feet the entire time.

In that regard, as we saw in the Pokémon Presents event, both Koraidon and Miraidon are all-in-one Pokémon in the sense that you don’t need to switch to other Pokémon to be able to traverse through water or fly through the air. This is where the “raidon” name makes sense in the legendaries, as you basically “ride on” them if you want to get to your chosen destination in the game.

Of course, we do believe that you don’t get to unlock all of the riding features on Koraidon and Miraidon from the very start. It might be similar to Pokémon Legends: Arceus, wherein you have to unlock the Pokémon that are able to swim or fly as you proceed through the game. That means that it is quite possible that Koraidon and Miraidon don’t have the ability to swim or fly at the very start because you would have to unlock these abilities first.

Also, we believe that both of these Pokémon are only going to be riding companions at the beginning of the game because it would be extremely unfair or easy if you were able to use them in battle. It won’t be too fun at all if you can just breeze through your battles early in the game by using a legendary dragon Pokémon. As such, it might be possible that the ability to use Koraidon and Miraidon in battle will be unlocked later in the game. Still, we are fairly certain that you can already ride them quite early in the game so that you will be able to travel through what seems like a large open world in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
