‘Re: Cycle of the Penguindrum’ First Film Date Confirmed for April 29, 2022

The 2011 anime Mawaru Penguindrum will get a remake as two separate films called Re: Cycle of the Penguindrum to air next year on April 29. The first part of the 24-episode anime remake will air in April, with the second portion of the movie to air sometime after. The announcement was made on the 10th anniversary Twitter account of Mawaru Penguindrum’s director Kunihiko Ikuhara.

A 15-second teaser trailer and the first adaptation’s key visual were also released. We see some returning cast members from the original anime in the trailer, like Subaru Kimura and Ryohei Kimura starring Kanba and Shōma Takakura, respectively. The theatrical adaptations will introduce new characters and scenes not shown in the anime version.

You can watch the teaser trailer below:

The original anime Mawaru Penguindrum follows the story of three siblings, Himari, Kanba, and Shōma Takakura. They experience extraordinary phenomena after encountering a strange spirit living in a penguin hat.

Brothers Kanba and Shōma bring their terminally ill little sister Himari to an aquarium where she suddenly collapses. Thanks to the penguin spirit, she gets a second chance in life, but with a catch.

In the teaser trailer and key visual, we see the Takakura siblings and other characters aboard a train that looks like it’s submerged in water. We also see penguins and apples floating in the sky. The teaser trailer’s description says that the film’s story will follow the Takakura siblings’ story ten years after they were tasked to find the so-called “Penguin Drum.”
