What was initially a plan for a Star Wars film rejected by Disney seems to have transformed into the worst flop in the career of director and writer Zack Snyder, as the recently released Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the sequel to Rebel Moon, is once again panned by critics, with the ratings listing it as Snyder’s worst movie – yes, worse than even the horrible Sucker Punch and the first part of Rebel Moon. And while Snyder’s ambition cannot be denied, and we can expect the extended R-rated cuts to receive better ratings, it seems that Rebel Moon will be, on an overall level, considered a failure.
The movie was officially released on Netflix on April 19, 2024, and while the streaming service had been hyping up fans ahead of the premiere, alongside Snyder and the cast members, who discussed the series in a number of interviews, it seems that nothing helped Snyder’s movie, although it remains to be seen whether Netflix will be satisfied with the commercial aspect of the movie’s run.
The Rebel Moon duology features an ensemble cast led by female star Sofia Boutella, who is accompanied by Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. It is expected that all these actors will reprise their roles in the second part. The screenplay was written by Snyder himself, alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. Two extended R-rated cuts of both movies, with more than five hours of material, are set to be released by Netflix at a later date.
But while many fans hoped that the movie would be an improvement on the poorly-rated first part (which has a 21% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a negative 31 rating on Metacritic), it seems that the movie is even worse, as it holds a low 18% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is currently Snyder’s worst movie on the platform, with the critical consensus summed up as follows: “Less a course correction than a compounding of everything that tangled up its predecessor, The Scargiver is an uninvolving space opera full of flat notes.” The movie seems to be doing a bit better on Metacritic with a rating of 36, but the consensus is still described as being “generally unfavorable.”
RogerEbert.com described the movie as follows: “More is often less in “Rebel Moon—Part 2: The Scargiver,” not only when it comes to the movie’s sweaty, vein-activating performances, but also its over-exaggerated and under-choreographed action scenes.” Dave Ehrlich of IndieWire told the following: “If this catastrophic bore of a film isn’t game over for “Rebel Moon,” then nothing will be able to stand in her way.”
Empire was a bit more sympathetic, but still very critical: “Marginally better than Part One, but still a weird, messy and humorless sci-fi that gives you little reason to cheer the potential continuation of this Snyderverse.” Screen Rant had a similar opinion: “The issues from the first installment are still there — and, in some ways, they only get worse.”
In a rare positive opinion, Jarrod Jones of The A.V. Club wrote the following: “Through this ambitious two-part series (which reportedly has three or possibly six more installments in the offing), Snyder has labored over his influences to the degree that watching it will be a riot for the devoted and feel like work for everyone else. Either way, Snyder’s passion remains his strength.”
This was a rundown of what the critics said about the movie. Did you see it? What is your opinion on the movie? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
