The comic book genre continues to thrive, and we’ve seen big battles at the box office between shared universes. With the end of the DCEU marked by Aquaman 2, fans are now looking ahead to the new DCU, led by James Gunn. His vision will offer fresh takes on well-known characters, including Superman.

Details about the new Superman movie are still scarce, but there’s a lot of excitement around the first chapter of the DCU, which kicked off with ‘Creature Commandos’. One of the key players in the new Superman is Sean Gunn, who will be portraying Maxwell Lord.

His version of the character will be quite different from the portrayal by Pedro Pascal in Wonder Woman 1984. In an interview with The Kristian Harloff Show, Sean Gunn explained why their performances will stand apart: ‘No one is gonna confuse me and Pedro.’

He pointed out that he brings his own unique style to the role, and the character’s approach will be different under James Gunn’s direction. While both actors play the same character, the interpretation will have a different tone and feel.

Despite some criticism about Sean Gunn’s multiple roles within the DC universe, such as voicing two characters in Creature Commandos, he is a familiar face in superhero films. He has experience in the genre, having appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy as Kraglin and also serving as Rocket’s stand-in.

Some people question the decision to cast him as Maxwell Lord, possibly due to his family connection to James Gunn, but his experience in the genre should help him bring something fresh to the role.

We don’t know exactly how Maxwell Lord will fit into the plot of Superman, especially with David Corenswet making his debut as Clark Kent. The first Superman trailer gave us only a glimpse of what’s to come, but Krypto clearly stole the show. We’ll have to wait for more details, but the movie won’t hit theaters until July 11, 2025.

For now, we can look forward to how Sean Gunn’s version of Maxwell Lord will add to the DCU’s fresh start.
