Netflix has released the first teaser for the Shadow and Bone series, a screen adaptation of Grishaverse’s fantastic novels by author Leigh Bardugo.

The series actually combines two literary series: the Shadow and Bone trilogy and the Six of Crows trilogy, which takes place chronologically after the events of the Shadow and Bone series even though it is set in the same world.

Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box) is the showrunner and executive producer. The main director and executive producer is Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline), while among other directors stands out Jeremy Webb (The Umbrella Academy, The Punisher, Altered Carbon).

Leigh Bardugo herself also participated in the project as an executive producer. The series is based on the books mentioned above, but it is important to point out how it will differ significantly from them.

“The series will be radically different from the books. But in the most amazing way. It will actually be high-budget fan fiction. ” Said Bardugo.

The plot of the series takes place in a war-torn world where an orphan named Alina Starkov has just unleashed an extraordinary power that could ultimately be key to liberating her country.

The threat of the monstrous Shadow Fold looms, so Alina subordinates her life to training as part of an elite army of wizards known as Grisha, where she fights to perfect her power while learning that allies and enemies can be one and the same – and nothing in this lavish world is as it seems. As the official synopsis suggests, “survival will take more than magic.”

Starring Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov, Archie Renaux as Malyen Oretsev, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej, Kit Young as Jesper Fahey and Ben Barnes as General Kirigan.

Shadow and Bone arrives on Netflix in April 2021 with all eight episodes.
