Shakira Shares Her Opinion on the 'Barbie' Movie: "My sons absolutely hated it."

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie was one of the biggest hits of 2023. The film was received well by both fans and critics, also receiving numerous awards and nominations. But, while the film was praised by most for its approach to feminist themes, not everyone was satisfied with how the movie tackled this issue. And while it did not surprise us that some men expressed their disdain, there were some issues on the female side as well.

Shakira is a well-known singer and one of the most influential public figures in general. She started her career in the early 90s and has since become a true pop and Latin icon. Recently, she was in the center of attention because of her highly-publicized divorce from football player Gerard Pique, but her life is currently back to normal.

The Colombian singer was recently featured on the cover of Allure magazine and as part of this, she also gave an interview to the magazine. One of the topics discussed was Barbie and Shakira was very open about her critique of the movie and how it portrayed certain issues. Here is what she said:

“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want ’em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost.”

The reporter further asked whether that mean that even if a women could do anything she wanted, that did not mean that she should, to which Shakira replied: “Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?”

It’s an opinion like any other, of course, but it is certainly interesting and Shakira’s approach to the issue at hand is definitely something worth discussing, even if only to simply confirm that her opinion on the matter is not entirely correct.
