In a surprising turn, the anticipated ‘Sniper Elite’ battle royale game, known as ‘Project Archipelago: Sniper Battle Royale,’ has been canceled. This decision came after Tencent, the game’s financial backer, withdrew its support. The move follows the disappointing performance of PlayStation’s live-service title, ‘Concord,’ which has made investors wary of similar projects.
Earlier this year, in mid-August, Rebellion, the developer behind ‘Sniper Elite’, invited players to a three-day pre-alpha playtest of Project Archipelago. The game featured squads of snipers engaging in long-range combat within decayed, near-future settings, blending modern architecture with futuristic elements like airships.
Despite this initial engagement, there has been little communication about the game’s progress since then.
Rebellion has chosen not to comment on the cancellation reports. However, it’s understood that the development team has been reassigned to work on the next main installment in the series, ‘Sniper Elite: Resistance’, which is scheduled for release on 28th January 2025.
The cancellation of ‘Project Archipelago’ highlights the growing uncertainty in the gaming industry regarding live-service games, especially after high-profile failures like ‘Concord.’ Developers and investors are now more cautious, reassessing the viability of such projects in the current market landscape.
As the industry continues to evolve, it’s clear that the success of live service games is not guaranteed. Both developers and investors are likely to approach future projects with increased scrutiny, aiming to avoid the pitfalls experienced by recent titles.
