Sony is reportedly exploring a return to the handheld gaming market with a portable version of the PlayStation 5.

According to Bloomberg, the project is in its nascent stages and might not see the light of day.

Nevertheless, Sony’s ambition signals a desire to challenge Nintendo, the long-reigning king of portable gaming.

While Nintendo has not yet released its anticipated Switch 2, Sony is eager to compete directly with this future device.

The company’s history in handheld gaming is notable, with the PSP selling over 76 million units and providing substantial competition to Nintendo in the past.

However, Sony’s follow-up, the PlayStation Vita, did not achieve similar success, with sales of around 16 million units.

Sony’s current portable gaming solution, the PlayStation Portal, allows for game streaming from a PS5 console or via the cloud, but it was initially planned as a standalone device.

This hints at Sony’s continuing interest in creating a portable that could bridge the gap between the existing PS5 and the future PS6, expected later this decade.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also developing a portable Xbox, though Xbox chief Phil Spencer indicates it’s still a few years away from launch.

This move by Sony could set the stage for a renewed rivalry in the handheld gaming space, bringing more options for gamers on the go.
