Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has explained the future of the popular series and how he plans to wrap up the story. The creator made it clear that season 3 will be the final season of the current storyline.

He feels the story of Seong Gi-hun has reached its conclusion, and he’s done telling the story he wanted to tell. However, he is open to exploring more of the Squid Game universe in a different way.

If he decides to return, it would be with a spinoff that focuses on new characters and different storylines. One idea he has is a series about the masked guards and their background. He’s curious to explore how they ended up in their roles and what their lives are like outside the games.

The whole story was discussed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, and when asked about the future of the franchise as a whole, here is exactly what Hwang said:

Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story. That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun. If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe.

The success of the series puts pressure on Hwang to keep the story going, but he’s committed to finishing the main narrative in season 3. The global popularity of Squid Game is undeniable.

Season 2 was a massive hit, with over 68 million views in its first week on Netflix, making it the top non-English-language show on the platform. This kind of success means there will likely be pressure for more, but Hwang has made it clear that he doesn’t want to stretch the story unnecessarily.

There have already been other ways to explore the Squid Game universe, like the reality competition show Squid Game: The Challenge and the Squid Game: Unleashed video game.

Season 2 of Squid Game has shown interest in characters beyond just the players, including figures like No-eul and In-Ho (the Front Man). This shift opens up possibilities for future spinoffs, and Hwang may just go down that path if he feels it’s the right direction.
