Sword Art Online Progressive Tops the U.S. Box Office


After the initial release of the Sword Art Online movie Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night that hit Japanese theatres in October, U.S. fans could see the movie on December 3rd, 2021. After only a week in the U.S. theatres, the latest Sword Art Online joined the list of the top 10 titles by December 10th. As a reality check for its popularity, the movie made over 1 million dollars during its opening weekend.

The movie is following a young high school girl, Asuna, who is trying to survive in the world of Sword Art Online. She soon figures out that death in the game means that she would never be able to return to reality. Asuna is not alone on her journey as she encounters a young swordsman, and they both realize that it is either glory or death for them.

Sword Art Online Progressive by far earned a total of over 11 million dollars in theatres around the world since it was released in Japan in October. It is estimated that the movie will total over 15 million dollars in revenue before it leaves the theatres. If anything, the numbers surely testify the popularity of Sword Art Online as a lot of modern-day gamers can relate with the plot.

While SOA fandom can feast on the latest movie in December and beyond, the release date for the fourth season still hasn’t been confirmed. Fans hope to see season 4 in 2022, however, we might have to wait until 2023 or even 2024 for the season renewal.
