‘The Batman’ Key Details From the Riddler’s Past Revealed
The Riddler, a supervillain appearing in DC Comics is a criminal mastermind in Gotham City who incorporates complex riddles and puzzles in his schemes. The Riddler is one of the most persistent Batman’s enemies and belongs to the collective of adversaries that make up his rogues gallery.
In Reeves’s The Batman, Riddler will go by his original name – Edward Nashton, and many are speculating this is due to Reeves’s humanistic take on the Dark Knight and his desire to keep it as grounded as possible. Edward Nashton will be played by Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners ), an actor famous for portraying peculiar and often disturbing characters.
In newly released tie-in book Before the Batman: An Original Movie Novel, fans are introduced with the road that led Bruce Wayne to becoming a Gotham City hero. It is revealed that Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne and Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton were actually friends in high school. Both orphans, both fierce and extremely clever, it is no wonder they found a companionship in one another, if only for a time being.
The story then goes on to follow Edward Nashton and his life after the high school, where his obsession with puzzles, riddles, word games and music started to grow strong. Because of his obsessive behavior, he soon earned the unflattering nickname “Ed-weird”.
Edward Nashton may be portrayed as an anti-hero in The Batman, a complex, troubled individual who wants to expose corruption among Gotham’s elite and may even provoke the audience sympathy as likeable criminals often do. This is only a speculation, but the dive into one’s past usually hints the depth of the character which the audience tend to fall for.
