‘The Boys’ Won’t Be Using the Homelander/Black Noir Comic Twist in the Series, Eric Kripke Confirms

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world, and its fourth season premiered on June 13, 2024, with the first three episodes. The initial reactions were lukewarm, but the series has been picking up the pace and is now Certified Fresh with high ratings as well. Despite the positive reviews and a viewership boost, the series has been confirmed to end with Season 5, which came as a sort of surprise to many, seeing how showrunner Eric Kripke had commented that the series might need to continue past Season 5 before this cold shower. But, while we will get only one more season, so there are no surprises there, Kripke confirmed that the ending will surprise us.
Kripke is known for reacting on social media from time to time, but he has also provided us with numerous background information in a series of recent interviews, so it’s always interesting to see and hear what he has to say about the show. In a recent talk, Kripke confirmed that the comic book’s well-known twist ending wouldn’t be used in the series due to various reasons, and that is good because that means that we will see something new and possibly very intriguing!
For all those who do not know, we have to warn you that the text below is going to be filled with spoilers from The Boys comic book, so if you don’t want to know what happens there, be careful how you approach the article.
So, what actually happened in the comic book? Well, as it turned out in the series, Homelander was not the villain everyone thought he was. The big revelation came when it was discovered that Black Noir was actually a clone of Homelander the whole time and that he was the one who “did things” while wearing Homelander’s costume. This was a shocking twist, but it worked great in the comics, and it helped make The Boys such a cult title.
But, as things stand, Eric Kripke won’t be using the same twist ending for the series, which means that the Amazon series will have an original ending:
The Black Noir character is very different and interesting in the comics. Was that ever a storyline that you were interested in at all?
No, and I don’t mind saying it. In the comics he’s a clone of Homelander this entire time and is actually the one doing all these horrific things. And again, it’s a hell of a twist. But it’s like, well wait, the villain I’ve been following isn’t really the villain. And mileage varies, and I’m sure fans are mad I’m not going that way, but that felt not as satisfying to me. I’m like, if I’m going to follow this villain, I want this guy to be the villain. So I was never really into the clone idea.
Plus, cloning feels like too — I’m going to sound silly — but cloning feels too magical for the show. We try to say that superheroes are the only slippery banana, and that everything else we try to make as grounded as possible.

This is actually great for two reasons. First, it means that Kripke is being careful about his story, i.e., that the series is still focused on its own world and that it doesn’t want to blindly follow the comics at the expense of its own logic, which is great. Second, this means that we will have a new and interesting ending for the series, which means that we can be excited about the ending of Season 5. The fact that Kripke just won’t be copying off the comic book is great and gives us something to look forward to.
This is what we have for you as of the time of writing, but be sure to keep following us for more updates!
