The Conjuring Universe is one of the major horror franchises of the modern era. Created and led by James Wan, it became a prime example of how modern (supernatural) horror movies should be made, with the fans loving the initial movies and the stories as they were told by Wan and the cast members.

While there was a significant decrease in quality following the second movie, the franchise still remained strong and loved by the fans, with Patrick Wilson’s and Vera Farmiga’s charisma helping the franchise in a major way. As fans will probably know, the franchise is getting ready for its final movie, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is set for a September 2025 release.

In light of that, we can confirm that the principal work on the film is done, and in light of that, one of the film’s stars published an emotional farewell to the franchise, a farewell that might also have far-reaching consequences.

The Conjuring franchise focused mainly on the exploits of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators and authors who supposedly help fight demons around the world.

While their cases have been well documented, including the notorious Annabelle doll case, there is little to no scientific evidence that any of these stories is true. Still, regardless of that, the two of them have been a source of inspiration for horror fans around the world, which led to this franchise as well.

Annabelle and The Nun also received their spin-off movies, but the gist of it was always the main couple, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga.

As said, the two of them had, until recently, been working on the franchise’s final installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is currently set for a September 5, 2025 release. In light of the production’s end, one of the film’s stars, Vera Farmiga, shared an emotional farewell to the series with the public:

In case you’re unable to open the link, which also contains a photo of Farmiga and Wilson in their respective roles from the franchise, here is what the actress wrote:

Roundabout 5000 days ago, this guy and I signed a WB contract and said “I do” to embodying Ed and Lorraine Warren. Today, he wraps. I have another 12 hours of laughter and insanity with him and then abruptly, he will walk off set, peel off sweat soaked demonologist garb, shave off his side burns, flash that dazzling smile and bid our fake marriage adieu.

Yeah… I got them feels today. It was a match made in heaven, PWilz. A hell of an era. Here’s to 12 years. I cherish you, @thereelpatrickwilson @theconjuring @wbpictures @creepypuppet @michaelchaves

While this does mean only that Farmiga is done with the franchise and that the movie will most likely be her final outing as Lorraine Warren, this also has fans worried. Namely, a Conjuring spin-off series was at one point confirmed, and the fans had been hoping that Wilson and Farmiga would be coming back for the series and more adventures. But, based on Farmiga’s post, this doesn’t seem likely.

We don’t know if this has any implications for the future – maybe she was just saying goodbye to the films, but could return; maybe the series was scrapped altogether; maybe she will be replaced by another actress – but keep following us as we are definitely going to keep you updated!
