The Most Profitable Blockbusters of 2023 Have Been Revealed, and You'll Be Quite Surprised!

We’re deep into 2024 territory as of the time of writing, but our good friends and Deadline have decided to go back to last year and reveal the most profitable box office blockbusters of 2023. It was a short trip down memory lane, but it was done properly because all the numbers were finally in, and there was enough time to objectively interpret the facts and numbers before us. This is why we decided to report on this list.

The list will contain a total of 10 titles and, as you will see, Disney falls short in this list (unlike the box office bombs list), but there are a lot of animated films there and quite a few surprises. This list doesn’t account for the total gross earnings of a movie but speaks about the profit made by the movie based on the budget and the earnings, which is a thing we thought you should know before reading. Now, let us begin!

10. PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie: +$114 million

image 2024 05 07 150211968

Synopsis: When a magical meteor crash lands in Adventure City, it gives the PAW Patrol pups superpowers, transforming them into The MIGHTY PUPS! For Skye, the smallest member of the team, her new powers are a dream come true. But things take a turn for the worse when the pups’ archrival Humdinger breaks out of jail and teams up with a mad scientist to steal the superpowers for the two villains. With the fate of Adventure City hanging in the balance, the Mighty Pups have to stop the supervillains before it’s too late, and Skye will need to learn that even the smallest pup can make the biggest difference.

PAW Patrol is an enormously popular children’s series, and while the movie definitely did great, and we know that Nickelodeon invested a lot of effort in this movie, we have to admit that seeing this children’s fan-favorite was a bit of a surprise, but in all honesty – we’re quite happy for the cute dogs!

9. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: +$124 million

image 2024 05 07 150740761

Synopsis: In Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. After acquiring Knowhere from the Collector, we find the Guardians working to repair the extreme damage done by Thanos—determined to make Knowhere a safe haven, not only for themselves, but for all refugees displaced by the harsh universe. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

This is Disney’s (and Marvel’s) only movie on this list. The company has usually been at the top of such lists in recent years, mostly thanks to the MCU, but this year has definitely been a flop for the franchise. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was a great movie and we’re glad that Gunn’s final Disney project is deservedly on this list.

8. Five Nights at Freddy’s: +$161 million

image 2024 05 07 150947026

Synopsis: The film follows Mike, a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby, and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before. Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa, a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail; You, Mack & Rita), Mike’s nights at Freddy’s will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

To be honest, this is a bit of a mystery for yours truly. It’s not that Five Nights at Freddy’s is a bad movie, but it is somewhat unexpected that the movie ended up being so popular, but it seems that the marketing part of the movie’s release did its job and that the franchise is looking at a very bright future!

7. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour: +$172 million

image 2024 05 07 151359374

Synopsis: The film has no synopsis, as it is simply a cinematic rendering of the singer’s Eras Tour.

Well… we don’t really have much to say about this, don’t we? Taylor Swift is so popular that the success of this concert movie speaks for itself and we think that it is best left at that.

6. Wonka: +$182 million

image 2024 05 07 151540863

Synopsis: Based on the extraordinary character at the center of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, “Wonka” tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.

It seems that children’s movies and musical movies were popular last year. Wonka wasn’t that well-received by the critics, but Chalamet’s charming performance and the magical world of Roald Dahl is something that managed to attract both children and adults, so this result is not that surprising in the end.

5. Oppenheimer: +$201.9 million

image 2024 05 07 151829104

Synopsis: During World War II, Lieutenant General Leslie Groves Jr. appoints physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer to work on the top secret Manhattan Project. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists have been developing the atomic bomb for years. Their work leads to results on July 16, 1945, when they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, which forever changed the course of history.

Nolan’s latest film won big at the awards season, and we can confirm that Oppenheimer is truly one of the best films of 2023. The movie did everything right, so it doesn’t surprise us that it did so well at the box office around the world. It’s simply a must-see movie.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem: +$204.5 million

image 2024 05 07 152137696

Synopsis: In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtle brothers set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. Their new friend April O’Neil helps them take on a mysterious crime syndicate, but they soon get in over their heads when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

Yup, you’ve read it properly – Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is fourth on this list, and we can confirm that it is a truly great reboot of the cinematic franchise. The art, the story, and the character development are all amazing, and we’re absolutely thrilled that the movie is so high on this list.

3. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: +$328 million

image 2024 05 07 152540873

Synopsis: After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

The Spider-Verse sequel had been long awaited back in 2023 and was one of the best movies of the year, without a doubt. It also did amazingly well at the box office, so this result isn’t really something that surprises us.

2. Barbie: +$421 million

image 2024 05 07 152807400

Synopsis: To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken.

The Barbie movie was a smashing hit at the box office and one of the most popular movies of 2023. And while many feel that the movie has unrightfully been avoided during the awards season, its legacy remains and we can understand why it is so high on this list.

1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie: +$559 million

image 2024 05 07 153044871

Synopsis: The movie tells the story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are brothers and best friends: Mario, the brave one with the “let’s-a go” attitude, and the perpetually anxious Luigi, who would prefer to go nowhere. We open with the Super Mario Brothers reckoning with their struggling plumbing business, and wind up in a whirlwind adventure through Mushroom Kingdom. Through their journey, we meet a cast of familiar, lovable characters, ultimately uniting together to defeat the power-hungry villain, Bowser. The Super Mario Bros. Movie takes what millions of gamers worldwide have loved for thirty-five years and levels it up to a new and breathtaking cinematic experience.

Oh yeah, it’s-a-him – Mario! The animated movie, while receiving mixed reviews from critics, was absolutely loved by everyone, and it made an amazing profit, surpassing even Barbie by more than $100 million. The movie is a very entertaining animated feature, and we’re very happy to see that it has done so well!
