Originally envisioned as a British mockumentary spin-off starring Ricky Gervais and co-created by Steven Knight, The Office soon became one of the most popular sitcoms in history. Television fans today know that The Office is one of the most popular sitcoms in history, and while both the British and American iterations are over, the franchise is far from being dead. We have recently reported that a spin-off series was in the works with Greg Daniels returning, but while information about the spin-off had been scarce at the time, we finally have some important updates about the plot of the spin-off, which is going to be set in the same universe.

Alongside the British original and the popular US version, the following countries also produced their own version of the series: Australia, Canada, Chile, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Sweden. Plans for a spin-off of The Office have been there since 2008, and as we reported not that long ago, it has been confirmed that original showrunner Greg Daniels is indeed moving forward with a spin-off.

Peacock has issued a full series order for The Office spin-off, which is, according to the service, going to follow “the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.” No release window has been provided.

While speaking about the series, Lisa Katz, President of scripted Content, at NBC Universal Entertainment said the following:

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock. In partnership with Universal Television and led by the creative team of Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, this new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper.”

This is certainly a major update for the series. As we know from earlier, Daniels is returning as the main showrunner, with Michael Koman (Nathan For You) joining as co-developer. We also know that Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore have been cast in the main roles for the upcoming The Office spin-off series, although we have not received any precise information on their roles in the upcoming series. This is all the information that we have as of the time of writing.

More information will certainly be released in the upcoming weeks and months, so be sure to keep following us for all the updates!
