‘The Penguin’ Just Brought Back a Very Unlikely Batman Foe in a Most Brilliant Way
When Colin Farrell was cast as Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin, in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, many fans were skeptical as they did not know what to expect from the interpretation. Farrell definitely did not look the part, but the costume design crew did an amazing job and Farrell delivered a brilliant villain who was so good that HBO ordered a standalone spin-off series focusing on The Penguin.
The series, titled The Penguin, premiered on September 19, 2024, and both the critics and the fans are loving it, calling it a worthy sequel to Reeves’ film and a brilliant example of world-building. The cast performances are also being praised, and it seems that the Batman world created and led by Reeves is truly shaping up to be what the fans wanted.
Many new characters have appeared in the series, some old ones are also back, and the fans are still finding them and identifying them. This report will be about one returning character who was brought back to the series in a very intriguing way.
So, what actually happened that inspired this article? What scene are we referring to? Well, as you probably know, in the series, when Penguin wishes to see his mother Francis, played by Deirdre O’Connell, he forgoes driving his luxury car and takes public transportation.
The Penguin takes every safety measure to keep his mother hidden since he is aware of the dangers that exist in Gotham’s underground. In one scene, The Penguin and Victor, played by Rhenzy Feliz, see a young man wearing a mask while he is passing out leaflets in the subway. The interrogation mark that Riddler utilized as his insignia is written with a QR code on these fliers. The phrase “Gotham’s true face,” which Riddler frequently used in his search for the truth, is also printed on the fliers.
This is, obviously, a follower of The Riddler, and while Paul Dano’s character doesn’t make a personal appearance in the series (yet), we can see that his legacy lives on. The people are aware of the deep-rooted corruption of Gotham City and it is understandable that The Riddler’s legacy lives on, and thus, the character was brought back by proxy.
Of course, the real Riddler is still in Arkham, and we are going to see whether Reeves will bring him back at one point, but if he does, it is obvious that the Caped Crusader will have a harder time now that the psychopathic villain has numerous followers on the streets of Gotham. Be that as it may, Reeves’ world is slowly growing and we are more than happy to see it blossom!
