When The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered in 2003, the world was introduced to the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, which, in turn, became one of the most successful and lucrative franchises in history. Led by Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, the series became a pillar of pop culture, and while the overall quality of the movies fell by the time the fifth movie was released, the series is nevertheless an important one.

Now, it has been seven years since the last movie in the series, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released, and since then, Disney has been considering its options when it comes to the franchise. There have been discussions about a female-led sequel that would see Margot Robbie in the main role, with Depp possibly returning in a smaller role, but also discussions about Depp returning to one of his major roles as the main actor in a new film.

But, it seems, neither of these plans is going to become reality, as series producer Jerry Bruckheimer seemingly confirmed that the franchise is starting from scratch, i.e., that the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie will completely reboot the franchise. Here is what he had to say:

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

Since Bruckheimer has been in charge of the franchise since its debut, we can take this as a confirmation that the series will start from scratch. Sure, Disney is probably going to produce a fun pirate-themed movie, but whether it is a good decision to reboot such a major and well-established franchise is something that only time will tell. At this moment, there is no official release window for the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie.
