‘The Rings of Power’ Season 2 Gives a Lore-Accurate, Clear Answer on Why the Hobbits Were Able to Defeat Sauron
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power became a huge hit series in spite of a lot of negative feedback and hate from “fans”. As we have previously stated in several of our reports, the series received a second-season renewal, and the new season, which debuted on August 29, 2024, has been well-received by reviewers and viewers alike. It will be intriguing to see how everything turns out, seeing how the series is taking a completely different turn.
The second series has been hailed as being more lore-accurate than the first, and the fans have been debating it online since the premiere. However, the question of how the series ties to Tolkien’s lore has been a key one from the beginning, and while we have reported on several major moments so far, another one just caught our attention.
In Episode 5 of Season 2 of The Rings of Power, the writers have addressed the issue of why the Hobbits were able to defeat Sauron. This had been hinted at by Jackson in his films, but the series finally makes it clear for everyone.
If you’ve seen the last few episodes of The Rings of Power, especially Episode 5, you’ll have noticed how the series is focusing on Sauron’s rise to power and the creation of The Rings of Power.
Recently, we’ve explained how the series handled the distribution of the Rings, the numbers, better than Tolkien himself, and in light of these facts, the series has seemingly provided us with another important moment that – this time – surpasses Jackson’s take on the franchise and is completely accurate with Tolkien’s lore.
The moment we are talking about is related to the Hobbits, i.e., why the Hobbits – of all the races in Middle-earth – were the only ones capable of defeating Sauron. Peter Jackson hinted at the answer in his movies, but he did not provide the viewers with a clear explanation, which is why – for those who have not read the box – this remained a question open to interpretation.
Of course, those who have read Tolkien’s writings will certainly know the answer to this question, but for those who have not, The Rings of Power provided us with a proper explanation. Namely, while working with Celebrimbor on the Rings, the disguised Sauron was asked whether the Men could handle such power – i.e., the power of the Rings – to which Sauron replied: “Men are capable of great frailty. But when the darkness falls, there are always some who rise forth and shine.”
Of course, the Elves and the Dwarves could handle it, but the Men… well, Sauron himself explained it.
This explains why the Men couldn’t defeat Sauron, as they would have succumbed to the power of the Rings, meaning that they would end up being corrupted by it. On the other hand, the Hobbits, whom Sauron underestimated completely because of their lack of any real powers, had the clear and pure heart to actually carry out the task, as seen in the main trilogy.
It was not without its problems, but nevertheless, all of this goes to show that The Rings of Power is becoming more lore-accurate with each new episode.
