As far as Marvel’s shows are concerned, WandaVision will go down in history as the first official MCU show, but also as one of the best MCU shows that have aired so far. A brilliant and heartbreaking continuation of Wanda’s story, WandaVision showed us just how powerful and how hurt the Scarlet Witch is, also serving as an innuendo for her villainous turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The series as a whole was well received by both critics and fans, and it was, at one time, the biggest talking point among MCU fans; its legacy is still strong, considering the fact that even now, we are still discussing the series.
If you remember back then, there were rumors that WandaVision had a secret tenth episode; the show ultimately ended after nine episodes, but the rumors suggested that there were originally ten episodes planned. Nothing was confirmed at the time, and most fans had probably forgotten about it, but showrunner Jac Schaeffer finally revealed the truth!
WandaVision premiered on January 15, 2021, as the first official MCU show. There had been Marvel shows before, but they were not part of the MCU, at least not officially. The show starred Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda and Paul Bettany as Vision, and Kathryn Hahn was introduced as Agatha Harkness, who would go on to get her own show later.
The story portrayed Wanda’s grief, as she used her powers to “kidnap” a whole town and create a fake reality for her in which Vision was alive and had a family with her.
The series ended on March 5, 2021, after nine episodes, but at the time, there were some pretty strong and convincing rumors that the series actually had a secret, tenth episode that was never shown.
There was no information related to whether the episode was filmed and simply shelved, or whether it was just scrapped, but a tenth episode supposedly existed.
At the time, though, we did not get any official information about the episode but now, three years later, showrunner Jac Schaeffer finally confirmed that there indeed was a tenth episode, but that it was ultimately scrapped and incorporated into the ninth episode. Here is what she said:
‘WandaVision’ was originally 10 [episodes], then, for logistical, budget, and creative reasons, we combined two episodes. Then moving into [Agatha] I wanted it to have the same surface area and real estate as ‘WandaVision,’ so yeah it was always nine.
This is in line with what series director Matt Shankman, the director of Fantastic Four: First Steps, said three years ago (which, actually, sparked the rumors back then):
Well, yeah, things were constantly changing and getting rebroken. The story was changing, especially a lot of the real-world stuff and the finale. There was a lot of experimentation going on and sort of trying different things out. We also at one point had 10 episodes planned and we ended up collapsing a couple, you know just to make the rhythm feel a little bit better.
WandaVision changed with time, as you can see, and Schaeffer even confirmed that Doctor Strange was planned for the series’ post-credits scene, but they couldn’t make it happen:
Initially, Doctor Strange was going to appear in the tag for ‘WandaVision.’ It’s Wanda sitting on the porch of that cabin, and she’s rocking peacefully. And you know how Strange can do those circles around someone, and make them go somewhere? The circle starts around her, like she’s going to be teleported somewhere, and she stops it, so Strange has to show up in person.
I just loved that so much, that Wanda would be like, ‘No, I’m not going to go where you want to teleport me. You’re going to have to come to my door.’ It was a good one, but another tag took its place.
